Still needs another book or two to complete series

There is a lot of excellent advancement of the interesting men in the book .. in fact, this book is more about the men, and how uniquely fine each one is ... The narration of their voices is very well developed and quite distinctly different for each.

there is a well written, and emotionally accurate section of one of the couples going to a swinger's night with unknown couples, that is very amusing ... I love how that couple's relationship is developing ... their uncommitted couplehood.

The ending of the book is quite bizarre, throwing a major magical event into a book that basically has not had any magic in it at all.... hopefully the author will come back to this series and finish up that story arc.

Amazing! This is sweet, fun, steamy, delightful, well written, emotionally comfortable, non-harmful, filled with women's truths, and filled with women getting what they want, and learning to really figure out what they want, and then demand it ... it's full of smiles and happy moments, and such delicious steam.

This is perfect ... no angst, no trauma, no kidnappings or threats, just a slice of everyday life as a young woman finds her feet in the paranormal world, and learns that she is strong enough to step outside of the box she's been raised in. And, whooo, mercy, this author can write the sex scenes really well!

The best Dr. Greta Helsing story yet!

We waited such a long time for the next Greta story, and the wait was worth it! This is my favorite of the 4 stories so far, this is like a hot fudge sundae on a beautiful balcony looking at the ocean on a summer night, it's that kind of deliciously good. The publisher's blurb is a bit cryptic, (pardon the pun), so I'll just say that all our favorite characters are present, and busy making things better, and we are introduced to Count Dracula and his wife in the most satisfying, amusing, delightful manner. This is a fun, deeply satisfying, heartwarming story. If you liked the earlier Dr. Greta stories, you'll like this one very much.

Ten hours of dithering ...

Revisado: 04-29-24

Argh! I finally have to give up with only an hour or so left ... I can't bear another minute of dithering ... the author has drawn out the telling of her (family background) secret for the entire book, only by now, we've all guessed anyway, so just get on with it and make something happen in the story besides piddly little conflicts. Clearly, there's a huge confrontation with the bad mommy coming, (she's told us at least 20 times that bad mommy will come and kill everybody horribly). I give up ... I really liked the first half, but this is just stretching it out and stretching it out, like the author had a word quota to reach. Grrr, it's ruined a pretty good book for me. The author's editor really needed to suggest cutting about two hours of childish dithering followed by childish excuses for not acting like an adult. One minute she's blowing dragon fire out of her mouth and melting 30 people, and shortly thereafter she's back to worrying about revealing who her mother is ... which is ok, maybe once or twice, but after many, many I need to tell him, I can't tell him, my mother will kill him, but I guess I won't tell him who she is, because why let him be prepared, let's just let it be a surprise til the end of the book when it's the big reveal. (but the rest of us have already guessed and just want to get to something happening besides dithering.) The characters are good; the structure is good; the language use is good; the narrator is good. Unfortunately, the author clearly is stretching one story out to try to make it into more than one book. There isn't a whole book's worth of content here. Cannot recommend.

From Mars, to Moriarty ... Andy Weir is quite the impressive author, plotting suspenseful tales on multiple planets in multiple eras. And Graeme Malcolm is the perfect narrator for this tale. And that snappy ending, whiplashing on the very last sentence, mmm, yummy.

Heartwarming, touching, deep, revelatory, up close and sweaty, rich and ripped open, a straight-on you're right there on the couch with them meet-up with the Bigs, before they were big, before they had confidence, before they had money, or fame. They were just like us, timid, no confidence, no backers, families who doubted and belittled them, wives who left and took the kids because they just couldn't keep the electricity on ... come in, sit on the couch, and hear the story of how it all started. It's pretty damn glorious.

Helen Harper's writing chops just keep getting better! This storyline is surprisingly excellent. I'm so pleased with Harper's approach, kind of sideways into a shifter/vamp story, without making the shifting/vampness the point; the overlaying storyline is the point, with the shifter/vampness just a normal every day part of the world. The female main character definitely "reads" as a mid/late 20's person striving to achieve respect as a newbie in her field. The end has a massive shift of perception that is beautifully done, and there is a satisfying ending. All in all, this became a fav book for me, which is a very rare thing. So, on to the next book. I highly recommend you read this one if you like vamp/shifter/human worlds, and if you like women succeeding in generally male-dominated professions.

Color me seriously surprised ... I listen to fantasy / romantasy / scifi audiobooks all day as background sounds to my work. This book I actually listened to every word, and paused it when I needed to leave the room ... this is a very clever, interesting book, much more developed and better plotted than the "usual" romantasy. Not a whole lot of world-building, but, some interesting changes to "standard" fantasy tropes about vampires. I'm actually looking forward to the next book in the series.

A positive-energy noir

Usually I find noir detective mysteries to have an overall flavor of depressed pragmatism with funky endings. This is the opposite -- a positive, hopeful, interesting ending with a room-to-grow, new realms to conquer outlook. There is some grit, we don't actually hear the violence of the killings described in detail, but we do get descriptions of the damage done to the bodies, which might be stressful for some folks. However, if you can get past the description of the first death, there's nothing worse than that in the way of descriptions, and so you're in the clear to sail to the end and the fun ending.
