Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Probably nothing I would have picked up on my own so I very much appreciated the suggestion I received from my sister. This story was so thoughtful and parts quite poignant.....a sweet insight into the love a grandmother has for her offspring.

Historia
Filled with sharply drawn, emotionally powerful senses, Walk Through Fire traces the hardships Sheila faced in her marriage and her professional life. Despite her skills as a violinist and music teacher, as well as her obvious entrepreneurial talent, she had to fight to overcome self-doubt and fears of failure. Sheila vividly details her struggles, including battling institutional racism, losing a child, suffering emotional abuse in her thirty-three-year marriage, and plunging into a deep depression with her divorce. And yet, out of that pain came renewed purpose and meaning.

What an inspiration!
Revisado: 09-26-23
Sheila Johnson tells an amazing and fascinating story. She grew up in Maywood, IL attending Proviso East H.S. and the University of Illinois. As the first African American woman billionaire, she relates the astonishing events of her life of being the co-founder of BET along with her 1st husband, Bob Johnson. In no uncertain terms, she gives the account of the abhorrent and dreadful way he treated her in their 33 years of marriage. She was demoralized and crushed but 'walked through fire' to become the successful entrepreneur and business woman she is today. She has gone on to establish Salamander Resorts, generously helped children's music schools, become the co-owner of 3 professional sports teams and performed philanthropic and charitable work that would make your head spin. It was a delight to "listen" to her amazing story as she herself narrated it. Get this book! What an inspirational and insightful story!

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Thought provoking!
Revisado: 09-21-23
Though this book came out last year, I just now got around to listening it. I must admit there were a few times near the beginning that I was going to quit but I'm so glad I persevered! What a delight to read about this quirky woman who is a brilliant scientist trying to make a go of it in "a man's world" of the 50s & 60s. While this was hysterically funny in parts, it certainly made me think of the trials, tribulations & hardships our mothers, grandmothers, indeed ALL women experienced, whether they were out in the workforce OR running a household. This book was a delightful eye-opener!

Historia
Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship.

Unstoppable listening!
Revisado: 10-06-22
Though I've never heard Nina Totenberg's broadcasts on NPR radio, I did thoroughly enjoy her recent and most interesting book, titled Dinners With Ruth. It's mainly about her lovely and close friendship with Ruth Bader Ginsberg, the late Supreme Court Justice. But in addition to that, it's the story of beautiful friendships and how they persevere over decades of time. With Nina's interesting "name-drops" of fellow correspondents, other Supreme Court Justices and many well known names in the Washington DC scene, I had a difficult time putting it down. I happened to "listen" to the audio version, thus enjoying Nina's own voice as a spirited storyteller, but I'm sure anyone would find it interesting to dive into a hard copy of this delightful memoir.

What a delightful book this was to listen to and also, I can imagine, just as wonderful to read. This book centers on when all air traffic was closed over our country on Sept. 11 2001. This is the mesmerizing story of how Gander, New Foundland opened their town to the passengers of 38 jetliners that had to immediately land there without crossing into US airspace. Find a copy of this book...READ IT! Your heart will feel good from hearing about all the sweet hospitality and camaraderie in this amazing Canadian town!

Adrift in a raft after a deadly ship explosion, 10 people struggle for survival at sea. Three days pass. Short on water, food, and hope, they spot a man floating in the waves. They pull him in. “Thank the Lord we found you,” a passenger says. “I am the Lord,” the man whispers. So begins Mitch Albom’s most beguiling and inspiring novel yet.

Very thought-provoking
Revisado: 11-04-21
Mitch Albom is a terrific writer. I just finished his new book -- The Stranger in the Lifeboat.
What would happen if we called on God for help and God really appeared? It's a poignant book that makes you think about your beliefs and that sometimes answers that we look for don't always come forth from where we think they'll be. There were times during the book that I thought, "I do NOT like this book!" But ultimately it is very thought provoking and very comforting.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

Dave Grohl is a storyteller extraordinaire!
Revisado: 11-01-21
The former drummer of Nirvana and founder of the band Foo Fighters - Dave Grohl - has written an extremely fascinating synopsis from his life growing up in a Washington DC suburb in the 70s up to now in the present. Just because I never listened to punk rock music back in the day, doesn't make this autobiography any less appealing. Besides telling fascinating stories that mention many famous names, I have found that Dave Grohl is probably one of the nicest guys in the rock'n'roll business. He's a sweet & conscientious 'girl dad' (he's a father of 3 girls) and yes, he even loves and speaks well of his mom. You'll love all the great anecdotes woven throughout.

Historia
Ida B. Wells committed herself to the needs of those who did not have power. In the eyes of the FBI, this made her a “dangerous negro agitator”. In the annals of history, it makes her an icon. Ida B. the Queen tells the awe-inspiring story of a pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated - a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for White passengers; a woman brought to light the horrors of lynching in America; a woman who cofounded the NAACP.

A wonderful escape!
Revisado: 08-08-20
Though it's similar to the 1978 movie, "Same Time Next Year," with Alan Alda & Ellen Burstyn, this book is SO MUCH better! Beginning in 1993, it chronicles the
same-time-next-year affair of a couple meeting every Labor Day weekend, taking the reader along as they move into middle age. It's a wonderful "escape" book -- meaning we all love to escape the normal everyday stuff!

Amazing!
Revisado: 06-30-20
What an amazing book, giving a look into a specific moment in history. It's filled with the thrilling account of not only the months of gearing up for the atomic bomb drop on Hiroshima, but also the years of the planning & manufacturing of the warhead. So many personal accounts of people who were "in the room" make it exceptionally exciting and interesting. I'm sure reading the hard copy is just as amazing, but "listening" to author Chris Wallace as narrator, I think, helps to make it sound like an armchair account.
