I love the idea of this book, and the author has create some rich memorable characters. However, the story was a bit lacking. Worth reading, but not a favorite.

Due to the experimental nature of writing in this book, it is a challenging listen. About multiple artists who are all named G, it can be confusing when she transitions to a new artist's story. Parade is a heavy book examining themes of power, motherhood, death and creativity. Each chapter is based on a specific real artist. As an artist myself, I found it depressing though accurate about many of the challenges woman artists face. I read it with my art book club and nobody liked it except possibly myself.

Such an interesting book about an usual place and it’s visionary owners. If you want to get to know New York, the real New York before it was gentrified and sanitized read this book. So many strands of life and fascinating stories of individuals weave together to create a rich tapestry with Coogan’s at in center. The owners of Coogans were true visionaries and created a place of safety to build community and heal real world rifts. I was particularly struck by how the relationship between the police and community evolved over time and impact this bar had. Michaud brings each individual story to life while creating a vivid picture of an exceptional community and a truly special place. This is a great read.

I loved his memoir, Not My Father's Son, but this was boring and completely unsuited to being an audiobook. You have to check the pdf every five seconds. What's the point of that? I love him, but these stories are just a series of name dropping, self aggrandizing half antics. The only mildly interesting chapter was on his visit with Gore Vidal. Overall, I gave it two stars instead of one because I liked his other book so much. I'm actually rather annoyed that an audible editor recommended a book that needs a PDF to be understood.

This is one of the most interesting books I've listened to in a long time. It's so funny too. I wish it was twice as long!

This book has some great points, but the reading was terribly slow. I got through it by speeding up to 1.5x. I think this one is better in physical book form for me.

Martin Jarvis was a pleasure to listen too. This was one of the best read audible books I've ever listened to. Beyond that, the story is wonderful- beautifully constructed and written, and filled with emotion and life.

Soul Killing Intellectualism

Some interesting ideas and beautiful writing, however the author has sacrificed human emotion and spirit in pursuit of an ideological point. While there is great value in individualism and many of Rand's ideas she had divided the world into stark black and white: individualism=good, collectivism=bad. The world is a spatter of greys, she rails about the evils of collectivism and doing things for fellow man as an extreme evil but creates the same extreme for her own ideology. It's the extreme adherence to an idea without flexibility that makes evil not collectivism or individualism. I found this book to be a dated argument written at a time when collective movements like communism and fascism were real and present dangers to be fought. It also perpetuates the worst stereotypes about artists suffering for their work.

As far as the narration goes, compared to other books I've listened to, I thought it was just passable. The lack of emotion and variation in Hurt's performance only made this book seem drier, more soulless and intellectual to a fault.

Thoroughly enjoyable and a lot of fun to listen too. The narrator really brings the larger-than-life main character alive. I found the story itself very really moving. Toole masterfully humanizes his wacky main character. I don't know how to say more without giving away the story but I loved it.
