Thanks for writing this, Jenna

Excellent level of detail on all of the different aspects of the processes, routines, etc. It really brought me back to my many years there. The funny thing is, I kipt thinking how spoiled she was for the treatment she was getting, because those without the name Miscavige are treated much more harshly. But good for her for eventually seeing through the mindfuck that they get you caught up in. Now if only all my old friends still on the inside could do the same...

This book was the therapy I needed
Revisado: 05-20-18
I recently left Scientology after 16 years. Leah so brilliantly articulates so many of the things that were going on in my head, but that the church always made me wrong for thinking. It was very therapeutic to hear from someone who had similar experiences to my own. I am so glad that I read this, and that Leah Remini took the time to write it all out.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Historia
Christopher Lee's history of Britain provides the definitive radio account of the events and personalities that have shaped our nation. Volume 5, covering the years 1660 to 1702, is about great change: the restoration of the monarchy, the Great Plague, the Great Fire in the nation's capital, and, following the immense unpopularity of James II's Catholicism, a ruler from a different country on the throne, William of Orange.

contains a glitch
Revisado: 01-26-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
One of these contains a glitch, where some of the chapters appear out of sequence. It's confusing when it happens, because the story suddenly jumps forward a few decades. Then, about an hour later, it jumps back to get the missing chapters. The first time I listened to it, I actually didn't catch what had happened. I was just left with a feeling of having been very confused about that period of time. I am not positive that it was in Volume 5 that it happened, but it seems like it was right around this point in the story.
Don't let that dissuade you from buying this book, because the story truly is brilliant. Just be alert when it happens, and jump around as necessary so that you are listening to the chapters in chronological sequence.

disappointing
Revisado: 01-26-15
What would have made Into the Wild better?
It would have been better if we actually knew anything about this guy's story. The problem is that the main character dies, and no one else was there to know what happened. And he left very little written documentation behind. So the author adds lots of fluff that doesn't have much to do with his story, in order to make this a full length book.

Historia
War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the book as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.

Would you consider the audio edition of War and Peace, Volume 1 to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but I can say that the narrator does a very good job of bringing the story to life.

Historia
Eliza Harris, a slave whose child is to be sold, escapes her beloved home on the Shelby plantation in Kentucky and heads North, eluding the hired slave catchers. Aided by the underground railroad, Quakers, and others opposed to the Fugitive Slave Act, Eliza, her son, and her husband George run toward Canada. As the Harrises flee to freedom, another slave, Uncle Tom, is sent "down the river" for sale. Too loyal to abuse his master's trust, too Christian to rebel, Tom wrenches himself from his family.

Amazing book, excellent narrator
Revisado: 01-26-15
If you could sum up Uncle Tom's Cabin in three words, what would they be?
Three words? Really?
What about Buck Schirner’s performance did you like?
He was an excellent narrator. I had tried the Richard Allen version and found it to be unlistenable. So I switched to this one, and was very glad that I did. He gives this amazing book the treatment it deserves.

Historia
Uncle Tom's Cabin opens with a Kentucky farmer named Arthur Shelby facing the loss of his farm because of debts. Even though he and his wife, Emily Shelby, believe that they have a benevolent relationship with their slaves, Shelby decides to raise the needed funds by selling two of them - Uncle Tom, a middle-aged man with a wife and children, and Harry, the son of Emily Shelby's maid Eliza - to a slave trader.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was impossible for me to keep interested in what the narrator was talking about. So I quit trying after the first chapter, and bought the version narrated by Buck Schirner. As much as I hated buying the same book twice, the switch was worth it, because that version was amazing. This book holds up remarkably well today, and I'm not sure why it is not read by more people.

Two political titans forge a modern city and a vibrant public sector in this history of strong leadership at a time of national crisis. City of Ambition is a brilliant history of the New Deal and its role in the making of modern New York City. The story of a remarkable collaboration between Franklin Roosevelt and Fiorello La Guardia, this is a case study in creative political leadership in the midst of a devastating depression.

Revisado: 01-26-15
What did you like best about City of Ambition? What did you like least?
The story was good enough to keep me listening to the end, but it was much more about the politicians than about the city of NY. If you aren't a fan of political science, then this probably isn't for you.
