Well written, ok. Well read, yes. But just not a subject that should ever be written about. I do not want to read about a poor, innocent young boy suffering in death. A terrible, depressing, miserable, gruesome, nasty, hideous, repulsive book! Unless this is what you get off on, avoid.

I purchased this version of the story specifically because it was read by Derek Jacobi, and I'm so glad I did! He was absolutely perfect for the role, and even huffed and puffed Watson expertly. Recommended!

A lot of people have praised Janet McTeer in this recording, however I seem to be of the opposite opinion, in lauding the praises of David Timson instead. It was he who I found easiest to listen to, and who enveloped me more in the story and the characters. Janet McTeer I found more one-dimensional, and grating on the ear. That's not to say it was a bad performance, just that of the two, I know which I prefered, and which I would choose to listen to again.

The book, if you haven't read it before, is rather long, and encompasses multiple generations of the families involved, and can get a little confusing at times, I found I had to hit the recap button quite a lot, but it is worth sticking with it. It was after finishing the book that I watched a couple of the film/tv adaptations, and while they were good, with strong performances, there is so much that they couldn't cover that the reading of the original work is essential.

Overall I found this to be one of the best, most exciting works I have listened to on Audible, and would recommend it.

What made the experience of listening to Rebecca the most enjoyable?

It's a slow start, I can't deny that, but once you get towards the end of chapter 2 it starts to pick, and soon becomes gripping. By halfway through the book you really feel as if you are the lead character, getting angry when she gets angry, cringing when she is caught out, etc.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Rebecca?

The characterisation of Mrs. Danvers is superb. She really is scary!

What about Anna Massey’s performance did you like?

Excellent diction and reading speed. Very good characterisation of male and female voices.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Beware the dead - they are still alive!

A great book already, but brilliantly narrated, which made it a pleasure to listen to. All the subtle nuances and inflections of the characterisations were present, especially Mustapha Mond - you almost felt yourself sat there in front of him while he was speaking. Can't recommend highly enough.
