Historia
Decades earlier Appius Tranquillus Surus wrote his will: it freed his slaves and bequeathed his businesses to them. He left an orchard to the Prisci, a family he was friendly with, on the condition that his freedmen could still take its harvest. The convoluted arrangement has led to a feud between the two families, each of which has its own internal strife. Endless claims and counterclaims lead to violence and even death. Lawyers have given up in exasperation as the case limps on. The original will has disappeared, along with a falsified codicil - and might there be another one?

Complex plot with Davis’s trademark humor
Revisado: 01-26-25
The reader does an amazing job of distinguishing a large number of characters who are intricately snarled in family and legal relationships. These would probably have been easier to keep straight with a physical book, but somehow she got them across. Flavia Albia, the informer, gradually unsnarls the strands that link these characters to get to the truths they have all tried to hide, accompanying her narration with her usual wry comments.

Perfect reader for a highly entertaining book. A challenging mystery, unique voice, original in every way. Master Mercurius is the drollest narrator I’ve ever heard.

A clever use of one family over centuries to illustrate a survey of Rome’s history. At times the information is delivered clumsily, but overall a painless way to learn the history of Rome.

Historia
Mary Dutton is accused of killing her husband by poison. The police see it as an open-and-shut case, and even those protesting for her believe she committed the act but is innocent of wrongdoing after suffering years of domestic abuse. Since his recent success in the high-profile Dryden case catapulted him to the front pages of the national press, Arthur Skelton is now one of the most recognisable barristers. Despite the odds, he agrees to represent Mary Dutton.

Nothing else like this. I laughed throughout and still there were very poignant moments. This author truly understands people and the human condition. This is more about the journey than the mystery but there are enough leads to feed the plot. Take your time and savor every phrase.

Historia
In the first century AD, during Domitian's reign, Flavia Albia is ready for a short break from her family. So in July she returns to Rome, leaving them at their place on the coast. Albia, daughter of Marcus Didius Falco, who is now retired as private informer, has taken up her father's former profession, and it's time to get back to work. The first order of business, however, is the corpse found in a chest sent as part of a large lot to be sold by the Falco family auction house.
