The reader does an amazing job of distinguishing a large number of characters who are intricately snarled in family and legal relationships. These would probably have been easier to keep straight with a physical book, but somehow she got them across. Flavia Albia, the informer, gradually unsnarls the strands that link these characters to get to the truths they have all tried to hide, accompanying her narration with her usual wry comments.

A flawless performance of an entertaining novel full of likable characters, red herrings and humor. A satisfyingly complex puzzle, too.

Perfect reader for a highly entertaining book. A challenging mystery, unique voice, original in every way. Master Mercurius is the drollest narrator I’ve ever heard.

A clever use of one family over centuries to illustrate a survey of Rome’s history. At times the information is delivered clumsily, but overall a painless way to learn the history of Rome.

An unusual set up brightened by the character of a charming boy and bringing together an unconventional heroine and hero make for an engaging and satisfying romance.

Nothing else like this. I laughed throughout and still there were very poignant moments. This author truly understands people and the human condition. This is more about the journey than the mystery but there are enough leads to feed the plot. Take your time and savor every phrase.

Excellent plot. As full of great details and amusing dialogue as the Falco series. These books are spoiling me for any others.
