Historia
High conflict is what happens when discord distills into a good-versus-evil kind of feud, the kind with an us and a them. In this state, the brain behaves differently. We feel increasingly certain of our own superiority, and everything we do to try to end the conflict, usually makes it worse. Eventually, we can start to mimic the behavior of our adversaries, harming what we hold most dear. In this book, New York Times bestselling author and award-winning journalist Amanda Ripley investigates how good people get captured by high conflict—and how they break free.

Should be required reading in school
Revisado: 04-02-25
Conflict resolution or shifting out of high conflict should be a skill everyone is taught so they could be comfortable with attempting to engage, just like cooking. Love how Amanda demonstrates in numerous memorable narratives how the conflict looks from multiple points of view. She also includes great explanations for what lies under conflict, how to investigate it, and what it's going to take for people to understand each other. Addressing time and timing as essential for success means over a long effort you can anticipate fatigue or hopelessness, so she does talk about what to do then. Amanda sets realistic expectations for people who are going to attempt shifting out of high conflict, but also some success stories. Highly recommend!

Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Such an important look at narrative
Revisado: 09-16-24
Though there are parts of the text that are repeated verbatim two or three times, the research feels thorough and well-substantiated. Highly recommend for people who are studying American history, law enforcement, and narratives. So unnerving how terribly inaccurate my perception of the War on Drugs was prior to listening to this.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Two-thirds great
Revisado: 02-06-24
Very thought provoking and easy to consume - the first two-thirds of it anyway. Honestly I could have done without the Post script chapter since it felt like a poor abbreviation of the takeaways in the second chapter.

Historia
With all the buzz geek culture receives, you would think it would be easy for parents to look up how to connect through their kids’ geeky interests, but it is more trying than ever. It is not a secret that keeping up with your children can be a challenge. You work hard, make sacrifices, and try to relate to your kids, but it can be an uphill battle when their interests, opinions, and habits change like the seasons. Relating to geeks, though, can be even harder.

More for parents who aren't nerds
Revisado: 01-14-23
Really good content and lots of good perspectives and tips. However, understandably the author wants this to be as enriching a read for non-nerd parents as for nerd parents so there's a lot of time spent bringing the non-nerd parents up to speed on fandoms and their hobbies. It does bring to question whether there will be a separate text on the way for nerd parents who are experiencing their kid's first time picking up a video game. Those nerd parents who want to get ahead in laying the right groundwork and get their kid accustomed to communicating with them are not as worried about connecting through shared hobbies as with optimizing how rich a conversation they could have with their kid.

Historia
Recent years have seen the introduction of concepts from the new and exciting field of complexity science that have captivated the attention of economists, sociologists, engineers, businesspeople, and many others. These include tipping points, the wisdom of crowds, six degrees of separation (or Kevin Bacon), and emergence. Complexity science can shed light on why businesses or economies succeed and fail, how epidemics spread and can be stopped, and what causes ecological systems to rebalance themselves after a disaster.

Don't jump to the end. Let it build on itself. The last chapter was the most mind-expanding but you need the language of all the previous chapters to set it up. Very interesting and memorable examples given in each chapter.

Historia
On December 4, 1931, a mob of White men in Salisbury, Maryland, lynched and set ablaze a 23-year-old Black man named Matthew Williams. His gruesome murder was part of a wave of white terrorism in the wake of the stock market crash of 1929, which exposed Black laborers to white rage. For nearly a century, the lynching of Matthew Williams has lived in the shadows of the more well-known incidents of racial terror in the Deep South, haunting both the Eastern Shore and the state of Maryland as a whole.

Revisado: 08-24-22
Honestly I hope this gets turned into an action/drama movie or show that drives more people to read this book. This should be mandatory learning material for investigators, genealogists, high schoolers, law makers, and law enforcers. There's a lot of responsibility just from having read the book to have these ethical discussions in the open and to implement a reconstruction of the broken justice system. At least this book shines a floodlight on the system of silence and who is protected by it all the way to government and law enforcement echelons.

Revisado: 04-13-22
I learned Castillian Spanish for eight years and then didn't touch it for twenty years. It's a totally perishable skill. This was a great way to start coming back to it. The exercises are very effective and it helps to hear and mimic the accent to get it down. I still repeat some of the lessons just because I'm a perfectionist but you do you. Pimsleur is working for me.

Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Everyone picks up something different from this that they need to hear. It'll be hard to hear it. The language may sound frivolous at first but when you get to the part that was meant for you it's going to sound like a friend talking you through it. Stick with it.
