Historia
When Jack and Elizabeth meet as college students in the gritty '90s Chicago art scene, the two quickly join forces and hold on tight, each eager to claim a place in the thriving underground scene with an appreciative kindred spirit. Fast-forward twenty years to suburban married life, and alongside the challenges of parenting, they encounter the often-baffling pursuits of health and happiness from polyamorous would-be suitors to home-renovation hysteria.

Absolutely loved it. And so beautifully written!
Revisado: 01-06-25
Nathan Hill's writing is so compelling, evocative, humorous, and descriptive that I didn't want the book to end. The narrator of the book was so perfect! I have listen to hundreds of books and this stands out as one of my favorites.
I tend to choose books with an interesting plot, but this book really was a marvelous exception. The book follows lives of the two main characters, Jack and Elizabeth, who meet as college students. At time the book was a little too wordy but I didn't even mind it because it was so beautifully written. There were also chapters that veered off from the characters to discuss computer algorithms and that I found interesting and highly educational. Such a rich book that was filled with so many treats and very funny at times.
It was quite amazed how he was able to show the reader the dynamics of the relationship between Jack and Elizabeth so well. It was so totally real and relatable. And I fell in love with their son Toby.

Historia
This touching and uproarious novel by author Paul Murray made everyone’s best fiction of 2010 lists, including The Washington Post, Financial Times, Village Voice, and others. Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the mystery that links the boys of Dublin’s Seabrook College (Ruprecht Van Doren, the overweight genius obsessed with string theory; Carl, the teenager drug dealer and borderline psychotic; Philip Kilfether, the basketball-playing midget) to their parents and teachers in ways that no one could have imagined.

This book was mesmerizing!
Revisado: 04-07-24
I am so glad this book was so long as it gave me the opportunity to enjoy it longer. I must start by also saying that this book is not for everyone due to its themes and Paul Murray's writing style (which I absolutely love). This book is very funny, poignant, beautiful, haunting and surprising. Murray is a true genius at bringing his characters to life and getting you to feel emotionally involved in their outcome. This is a messy book so don't expect everything to wrap up in a neat package.
I must also comment on the 3 wishes song (no spoilers). I loved that song and it keeps going around in my head. I thought it was a real pop song (maybe Murray missed his calling).

Revisado: 04-03-24
I loved this story. I wasn't sure what to expect as I had not heard anything about the book. I love the relationships among all of the woman in the story and how they navigated theirs lives within the social and legal constraints surrounding them. Wonderful and original.

Beginning okay but went downhill fast!
Revisado: 10-03-23
I have no idea why this had so many excellent reviews. It started okay but got awful in a hurry. The plot became bizarre and the depictions of the military were ridiculous. The characters were all stereo types.

From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Got more boring the longer I listened!
Revisado: 02-12-23
I found the premise of the story interesting but the more I listened, the less interested I became. The story became so boring that I stopped listening with five hours left to go. At this point I don't even care how it ends. This book is way too long! I have never read anything by this author before and maybe those who enjoyed this book so much are fans of the author.

I couldn't finish this- it had no literary value!
Revisado: 01-31-23
The longer I listened to this book the more I disliked it. I really cannot understand how this book had such an outstanding rating. I have never read anything by this author or heard of her before. Perhaps all the people that loved this story were already avid fans of hers.
I am a prolific reader and listener of books. It is rare that I select a book and dislike it this much. I found all the characters to be either uninteresting, irritating or dislikable-especially the protagonist. I don't read romance novels but this seemed at times more like a cheesy romance novel.
I guess I should have researched the author before selecting it! Definitely not my type of book.

Tedious and too many Trite Details
Revisado: 12-02-22
I can't understand how so many people gave this book 5 star ratings. I found it really annoying listening to a blow by blow of what the butler was doing. There was very little plot and I wasn't particularly drawn to any of the characters in the story. It was well read but the butler character just got on my nerves. I have absolutely no interest in other books of this series. I was also miffed that the reader did not bother find out the proper pronunciation for Canyon de Chelly.

Intricately woven plot!
Revisado: 08-03-22
I absolutely loved this book. The plot was a little difficult to follow in the beginning but as the story enfolded it was quite masterful.— everything was woven together beautifully by the end — which was very satisfying. I don't usually listen to or read books more than once but I will make an exception for this one. I enjoyed this as much as Station Eleven.

Can't understand all the fuss over this book!
Revisado: 01-05-20
I stayed away from this book for the longest time but a good friend, whose judgement I trust, told me what a wonderful book it was. I thought the book was totally unbelievable and contrived; even for a novel. There was very little about this novel that seemed even remotely realistic. Also the narrator had an annoying, whiny voice that was difficult to listen to. I was barely able to finish the book.

Historia
In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then, a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon, other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind....

Loved this but I'm not sure why!
Revisado: 01-04-20
As I listened to the story, I found myself strongly relating to and at the end bonding with the protagonist of the story, Janina Duszejko. The entire story is told through her eyes. This is a such a unique story; especially considering it is a murder mystery. It can be a little slow at times because you are hearing the story through the unfiltered mind of Janina.
I know several people have commented on the narrator but I believe that she is quite perfect for this particular story. I also found the ending to be very satisfying.
