Unrealistic dialogue/uncanny valley narration
Revisado: 03-01-24
I thought I could finish, but I can't. All the dialog/banter felt weird and out of place. I regularly found myself thinking "no humans speak to one another like this"
The narration was done by AI and it's odd how I could simultaneously be surprised at how good it was and also how bad it was. Vocal uncanny valley I suppose? Sometimes it would nail a complex inflection and then turn around and fumble a simple exchange. Pauses also needed some work. I would definitely avoid this narration and will personally avoid any AI narrations for the next few years at least.
Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, I'd be surprised if AI didn't write the entire book. All the dialogue is so stilted and weird. Perhaps Mr. Barrett outsourced this one to ChatGPT. Or has never spent time with other humans?
There is an insane amount of repetition. Thinking about it over the weekend it occurred to me that all the conversations are reminiscent of dialogue wheels in video games. Select this odd question - receive info dump, select the next odd option - receive info dump.

A great first in series by Koontz
Revisado: 02-21-24
I don't think anything he can write will live up to my enjoyment of his Odd series, but this was a solid first in series. I look forward to the next book. The narrator did an excellent job, even if some of her male voices made me chuckle.

Well written, well narrated story
Revisado: 02-21-24
Well written, well narrated, but those characters... I wanted to like this one so much more than I did. The present day characters were great, every character set in the past was pretty difficult to endure.

I enjoyed this short. I'd like to see it expanded into a full novel, seems like there's still a lot of story to tell.

A sweet story with a thread through time
Revisado: 01-09-24
Not my usual genre, but it was recommended for fans of Matt Haig, so I was curious. I can see why someone might lump the two together, but Haig remains the undisputed author for making me feel.
Beautifully written story. Very sweet. I'll give it another listen eventually.
Narration was excellent. The male narrator should simply read any song lyrics in his future narrations 😬😂

Was this intended to be funny?
Revisado: 08-25-20
I love funny books. Hard Luck Hank is one of my absolute favorites. And Bray is one of my favorite narrators so how could I lose? At about 3 hours in I realized Bray had my full attention but that I hadn't laughed once. Any time now, right? Still at the half way point I hadn't laughed or even chuckled. Isn't that sort of a sign the book just isn't funny? It isn't even that the humor is adolescent, I'm not too good for some childish humor. There just wasn't any.

Vampires are real. Vampires aren't real? Are vampires real? Thus goes the majority of Stake as you try to decide what and who to believe.
Narration was excellent and that cover is pretty great too.
I really appreciate the author's perfect demonstration of why the right to bear arms is an excellent thing. It's an equalizer so that a small individual can defend him/herself against a larger attacker.

Shocking facts on the Illegal Immigration flood
Revisado: 11-03-19
The fact that the government is doing a lousy job of securing our borders will come as no surprise to anyone that has been paying the slightest bit of attention for the past decade. The number of ways the government is ASSISTING with illegal immigration with our tax dollars may blow your mind.
If you are the type of person that believes children are being separated from their parents and kept in cages you will not enjoy this illusion shattering collection of facts.
The narration was excellent. Pamela Almand made short work of the maze of government's convoluted program titles.

Listen, having kids is great, my little Gigi Collins and Pete’s daughter Hannah are sweet little fluffs of cotton candy, spun from the silk of fairy spiders who live in the clouds. But man, can they cause trouble. Seriously, you’d think a two-year-old couldn’t possibly threaten the very existence of our physical reality, but, well, you know where this is going. So join me and Pete, and Bobo, and of course the man himself, Nikola Tesla, on another spine-tingling, bowel-loosening thrill ride, and remember: bring your adult diapers.
