Annoyingly dense heroine and repetitive narration.
Revisado: 11-21-24
I realize I’m very much in the minority here but I do not understand the excitement about this book. Fayre is an irritating heroine: she lives in a pity party that makes her a poor listener, reactive, and impulsive. She shows audacity that makes no sense given her back story and there’s no viable reason for Tamlin to fall in love with her. 🤷🏻♀️ There’s a lot of repetition in the storytelling, like the reader is the dense one and not the heroine. It’s an immature love story, not really interesting fantasy. Disappointing given the reviews.
The Throne of Glass series is better written with far more likable and intelligent characters.

Much better narrator
Revisado: 11-02-23
Enjoy the whole series and the narrator makes a big difference. This one is so much better than the pitchy narrators of the last few books. Light and fun even if predictable stories. Great for a distraction in a different world.

Struggling with this narrator
Revisado: 10-17-23
The usual Daisy story is fun and light, as expected. The pitch of the narrator’s voice of so high, it hurts. I miss the original narrator. This one and the last one are not of the same quality. And this one hurts to listen to.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Disappointing
Revisado: 07-02-23
I really enjoy this series overall but this particular novel isn’t as well written as prior ones. Lots of needless repetition, especially when Rachel is constantly lamenting about Kisten, worrying about Marshall… It’s like teen angst and it’s overdone. It’s made worse by the new narrator, who may be great for young adult romance but she isn’t right for this. Her voices are grating and her pronunciation of words and names isn’t consistent with the prior narrator, which is jarring. And irritating. I’m going to continue with the series because I read that the old narrator returns. But I hope the writing improves too. Rachel has her immaturity and issues, which makes her fun, but this is a bit much in this book.

Fun story, tough narrator
Revisado: 01-09-20
The story wasn't bad at all, not the narrator was tough to listen to. While she could do a variety of voices, she read every line robotically... Just in a different voice. It was distracting. Given the plethora of voice talent out there, I'm surprised when such a stilted narrator shows up. Pity, because she has an impressive range of voices. She just reads poorly.

Very interesting and engaging story
Revisado: 05-19-19
Loved the story, loved the detail and the characters. Could not get past the voice of the narrator. Her deep, gravelly voice is not unpleasant, but in no way diff it seem to fit the actual narrator in the story. The voice of Ms Aghdashloo sounds like a mature woman. Had this story been set up as more of a long ago reminiscence, that might have been ok. But our narrator was a teenager... She doesn't get older than 19 in the story. I found the disconnect between the narrator's voice and the character distracting, which unfortunately takes away from the rich story.

Historia
The child of a scheming father and ruthless mother, Lady Jane Grey is born during a time when ambition dictates action. Cousin to Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I, she is merely a pawn in a political and religious game in which one false step means a certain demise. But Lady Jane has remarkable qualities that help her to withstand the constant pressures of the royal machinery far better than most expect.

Great story, weird editing
Revisado: 03-31-19
I enjoyed the story and like having different voices. But the editing was weird - sometimes there were stretched of silence that McAfee me think the story stored playing, and other tints the editing between voices was so tight that there was barely a second between one chapter and the next. It was distracting to the listening experience, unfortunately. Bit I like Alison Weir's historical works and did enjoy this very much overall.

Entertaining, well written, fun performance
Revisado: 07-05-18
I didn't expect to like this book as much as I do... But it is well written, full of adventure and drama as well as funny. And the narrator does a wonderful job of enjoying the language he is given and not rushing through passages. He really plays up certain, creative turns of phrase and makes listening and highly enjoyable experience. While of course I am rooting for the protagonist, and he gets away with much, the story is told so well that I don't mind the pas de deus so much. I definitely recommend this and look forward to the next!

Fascinating story, less than fascinating narrative
Revisado: 06-11-18
The life story of this Italian boy during WWII is truly fascinating and compelling. And there are many stories like his, in that they are riveting and courageous and sad and powerful. And they are real. I love that about this book. It's about a life that made a difference in the war and it so deserves the telling.
That said, I didn't think it was particularly week written. Some passages and much of the dialogue felt a bit juvenile or forced. It seemed riddled with cliches and the expected turn of phrase, rather than original writing. The narrator did what he could, so the story was listenable, but I was let down that such a great life story had a mediocre telling.
It was also a bit awkward that at the end, the author made it more about himself and his research, rather than truly telling the rest of Pino's story. There was a better way to end this tale, keeping the focus on the hero.
I still recommend it for the story of Pino... Just grit your way through the mediocre writing.
