I am not typically a fan of historical novels but listened to this one, based on a tip from a friend and my husband. There were times when my mind wandered because of the impressive extent of described history (perfect for history buffs) but nonetheless I was (surprising for me) mostly captivated by the detailed descriptions. Appreciate the compassionate and realistic portrayal of Native Americans, the demonstration that an accumulation of small acts of good bring health to all involved, and the general story line which connects the generations, earth, and spirituality. Bravo!
The narrator used a different voice for every character which is quite a feat for so many characters!

Historia
Lillian and her restaurant have a way of drawing people together. There’s Al, the accountant who finds meaning in numbers and ritual; Chloe, a budding chef who hasn’t learned to trust after heartbreak; Finnegan, quiet and steady as a tree, who can disappear into the background despite his massive height; Louise, Al’s wife, whose anger simmers just below the boiling point; and Isabelle, whose memories are slowly slipping from her grasp. And there’s Lillian herself, whose life has taken a turn she didn’t expect....

enjoyed just like her other stories. she's great at interweaving people and their stories and bringing them together and apart while each grows in their own unique way. food or another sense is always at the center of her books too.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

Honest, brave, and a call to love

Easy to listen to, excellent insight into humanity through the eyes if the author who speaks to her truth as she sees it in the moment but with great reflection. Humorous and real.
