Favorite Tana French so far
Revisado: 03-01-25
my least favorite trope in all of literature is the miscommunication "oh I can't tell him because blah", "oh if only I could say blah but she wouldn't understand". it is a guaranteed way to make me dnf a book.
Somehow despite Cal, Trei, and Lena all doing this multiple times, it always felt like it made sense and fit in the story, and what's more actually made it more compelling.
As always the language is beautiful and the reader catches the nuance of tone and accent very well.
It felt like things wrapped up pretty nicely at the end which makes me worried we won't get a third Cal/Trei book, I love the characters and their town, but if this is really the ending of their story it is quite a fitting one.

Good conclusion, not as polished as his other works
Revisado: 01-22-25
not really the best storm light novel, still very dramatic with a lot of lore and explanation of cosmere mechanics and a must-read. the pacing just felt kind of off for some reason. I know a lot happens, and in the moment I can feel the events take the time they need but with such a long book and the necessary gaps in reading somewhat imposes a more global view of events as well which makes them all seem relatively inconsequential in the grand scope of things, especially as you reach towards the sanderlanch ending. I know "journey before destination" but it didn't feel like a journey so much as a meandering mountain road that keeps bending back on itself and yeah at the end you get this great view but while youre below the tree line everything kinda looks and feels the same. The only real reason I'm giving this four stars is the other novels I feel like they showed Sanderson should be able to balance the story's momentum better, and somehow this one felt a bit unpolished in comparison.

But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic - the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience - have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine.

gets much better later on
Revisado: 09-08-24
I really felt like the story felt very immature at the beginning with a whole being almost caught because of smelling like sewage and I was like I don't remember this being a YA novel and then suddenly it gets very gory almost out of place.
the main character had the feel of a whiney anime protagonist, and while she does become more bearable at the end I had such a hard time pushing through the first two thirds of the book.
I'm glad I stuck it through though as the shanigans with basically what amounts to computer hacking but with magic was very interesting and while I can't say I was surprised by any of the plot twists, i don't feel like the story ever took a turn that made me feel like that was a bad decision (after we got past the beginning of course)
I might consider reading the sequel since the author seemed to have gotten better as the book progressed.
Voices were pretty fun, if a bit hard to distinguish at times, but several of the characters had such perfect voices

Historia
The tranquility of a luxury cruise along the Nile was shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway had been shot through the head. She was young, stylish, and beautiful. A girl who had everything . . . until she lost her life. Hercule Poirot recalled an earlier outburst by a fellow passenger: “I’d like to put my dear little pistol against her head and just press the trigger.” Yet under the searing heat of the Egyptian sun, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

decent
Revisado: 05-31-24
This is my first Agatha Christie novel, and I can understand where this novel had set a precedent, and there is a good deal of detective mystery in it after you get about halfway through. I feel there were quite a lot of redundant conversations early on and it was hard to get into.
The characters were certainly enjoyable, especially Poirot, and when it gets into the mystery portion it was compelling, but there were certain things that don't seem to have aged well in terms of technique: several times there was an important piece of information that a character would have a long wind up in explaining how they acquired the information only to be interrupted right before they said the crucial two or three words. In one scene this literally happened twice back-to-back, and it was feeling rather farsical at that point.
As for the narration I was actually surprised to find myself disappointed in Branaugh. The accent work was done well enough and the characters distinctive, but too often the speech tags or other descriptors were read in the same voice of the character instead of the narrator and it kept drawing me out of the moment having to pause and remind myself that Poirot likely didn't just say aloud "he studied his cup as he said" etc. There were also multiple instances of sentences bleeding into each other, even when it seemed like a paragraph's end would call for a bit of a breath, something I'd expect a Shakespearian performer to be able to handle.
Overall it was a fun experience but I guess my standards were just higher than usual for this particular writer and actor, which has lead to slightly lower-than-average ratings compared to what I usually give.

Nice ending
Revisado: 04-08-24
So my biggest gripe about the series is kinda silly, and that is how noticably better the writing gets as it progresses. I could barely follow the first book with it's disjointed attempt at telling a non-linear story. The second book corrected my issues with the first by approaching the subject in a more traditional format. This last entry to the series manages to in some ways make the first books' time skips much more acceptable in hindsight. The greater diversity of characters was also appreciated.
with how much of a good writer Thompson had become since the first book I regret the series being over.

glad I gave series another chance
Revisado: 04-01-24
I had such a hard time following the first book. The way the author skipped time so frequently, just confused things and really at the end of the book, I was thinking how this would still have been an interesting story, but at least understandabl, but the unnecessary jumbling of plot points only served touddle an otherwise interesting concept.. I almost didn't continue the series.
a couple years later I picked it back up with this book and I'm glad I did (even if I forgot who several of the characters were). The author did away with all of the confusing time jumps and just told a good story. the concepts are as imaginative as before and the characters as varies (actually more so I think, with the greater role of Aminat in this novel.)
I actually am looking forward to the next one in the series now.

Hard to start, couldn't put down until the end.
Revisado: 02-17-24
I swear I had no idea what was happening for the first three hours at least despite restarting the book three times. there is so many characters with half explained exposition and character descriptions that I had no idea who we were following half the time. Just when I finally started to get ahold of who's who and decided my favorite character he is killed off unceremoniously and I almost gave up.
fortunately I didn't because everything became significantly better as things progressed and the various mysteries were more established. by the end I had a clear image of the world and events and I can say I definitely liked the book by the end, but boy howdy it was hard to get to that point, and I feel I have to knock a star off in honor of my past self's frustrations.
I cannot tell whether it was the writing or just the way the narration takes literally only one short breath between character view transitions. sometimes it felt like a paragraph started with one characters view and ended with another.
so I am taking a star off of narration as well as story.
definitely worth the read if you can power through the opening

Room for improvement
Revisado: 06-24-23
I am not too often this critical on books but I wanted to like this book. After To Sleep I was impressed by the author and although I have not followed his development in writing through his early years as so many other have, (and having not read the inheritance series) I may not know too much about his overall style.
To Sleep was vastly poetic and had some interesting concepts and rememberable characters.
This book is much different. At it's best, it is an eloquent and relatable exploration of grief and finding self-purpose after loss. At it's worst, it is an hour and a half of over-tread arguments for and against religion that you have probably heard before:
"How can you believe in God if they allow evil to happen?"
"How can you expect people to act morally unless the threat of eternal judgement is held above them?"
Neither of the arguing characters offer any sign that their positions may vary and it is a futile waste of time on behalf of both their characters and your own, for certainly these arguments are nothing new and any religious/non-religious person hearing them are going to change their mind in the way presented in this book.
Which is especially a shame after noting that there was potential fuel in these character's back stories to lead credence to their arguments from certain points of view, but we never dwelve into what the arguments mean personally for the characters and only view them from a dialectical sense.
I have definitely read/listened to worse books, and am not sorry for having given this one my time, but I don't think I would venture this particular one a second read.
Sound design and narration were quite enjoyable however.

As much as I am sad that we cannot have more of the old characters, i rather quickly fell in love with the new ones
it is also fun hearing of the old familiar faces now being referred to as mythological figures
overall a very exciting noirish detective novel with a nice sprinkling of magical mayhem

nice light pace, wonderful characterization
Revisado: 05-09-23
The first thing that must be said is how wonderfully the author caught the tone and voice of the world of the late 18th/ early 19th century. The whole book felt appropriately aged but not inaccessible for it.
The characters were also memorable and well fleshed out. There is a palpable kinship between the dragons and their handlers that manages to avoid feeling heavy handed.
The most curious feature of the story is the pace. There really doesn't feel to be any major conflicts until past halfway through the story. A lot seems to just be focused on the transition between two lives. I can understand this not appealing to some, but I feel the author made up for this by maintaining a well-thought out world and characters for us to explore.
