Historia
The country of Midoka embraces magic, also known as the gift. Its most powerful order of sorcerers, the Mist Women, teach novices at the coven in Maishi Hou, and their graduates serve as expert advisors all over the world. Magic is every Midokan’s undeniable birthright. Except for Yua. An unwilling resident at the Maishi Hou coven, she can’t call forth the smallest flame. Her only childhood memory is soaked in blood. The only hint as to who—or what—she is lies in her blackened veins. But they also hide a shadow thirsting for blood, and even the leading Mist Woman fears it.

Great Story, but didn't care for the audio
Revisado: 08-01-23
I was first introduced to this story via the audiobook by downloading it on StoryOrigin for review. I will say that I could not get through the audiobook, though I tried several times. The narrator seems to be putting on an English accent but doesn't do so very convincingly, which leads to some awkward passages, especially when the inner dialogue is read.
Once I downloaded the ebook instead of the audio, I actually really enjoyed the story. Yau has been lied to for most of her life, and her relationships with others are almost non-existent because of the lies she's been told and the rumors about a massacre from which she was the only survivor. Yau has no memory of this, and the only clues to her past are her black veins, which seem to seep with evil. This all changes when she meets Aza, a sand blade warrior who has blood on her own hands. For the first time in Yau's life, she finally has a friend she can trust. With Aza's help, Yau takes control of her shadow and discovers her vampiric nature and also a bit about love and passion.
Sarina Langer's world-building and prose were well-developed and left me wanting more! I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series!

A bit confusing at times, but an okay book.
Revisado: 05-18-23
This was a hard one for me to get into for some reason. I've started it several times and had to backtrack multiple times to try to figure out what was going on. I think this has a lot to do with the writing style, which kind of hops around a bit. There are also two major characters with similar names. Overall, the book was just all right. It's not a series I'll be finishing.
I will say that the narration for the audiobook is beautifully and professionally done, as are the stunning covers for this series, which are what drew me in in the first place.

Historia
Generations have passed since the Unsundered god, Sartum, destroyed the City in Blue, the center of mortal use of magic. The betrayal of Sartum by William Reis and Myriam VolFar in the waning hours of that conflict has shaped the world of Alos and continues to do so. In the south, magic runs free. Though mostly bound to magical creatures and places, mortals are able to use the power that flows through the very land and its people. In the north, the lands are clean from the infection of magic.

A wonderful series starter!
Revisado: 04-18-23
I really enjoyed this story. It starts with Layten, a boy from a small village, who is chosen to become a scholar and study at the House of Knowledge. This is pretty standard Fantasy, but once he arrives at the House of Knowledge, that's when the fun begins. I really enjoyed his relationships with Hopwell and Wix! The banter was priceless! I also appreciate the different backgrounds the characters represent and how differently they react to their situations, yet all band together as friends no matter their status. The magic system and the general lore of the world are well thought out and unique. I love how magic isn't used for everything. It is sacred and must be used by necessity, rather than convenience lest one dishonor the gods. The last few chapters in the hidden library are full of action and make you excited to continue the series! The narration of this book is also very well done, with distinct voices for each character and tones that are easy to follow.

Skyler finally had it all...but for the third time, the state had taken everything away from him. It wasn't his fault, though, or was it? If only he hadn't been so stupid. If only he hadn't been so careless. If only he hadn't fallen in love with his best friend, Cameron. Now, sitting in the social worker's SUV, he stared at his new house and the strangers standing on the front steps. His life had been an uphill climb, and now he had to start over. Again. One day, he might call them family, but he had finally learned his lesson.

Overall, a good story
Revisado: 04-12-23
I'm giving this book a solid 3 stars. I absolutely loved the book's first half when Sklyer is dealing with the situation with the Tisdales and Cam. There were solid emotional beats, and the story felt realistic. I am from the South, and this is precisely how anyone in the LGBTQIA+ community would be treated. I was a snotty mess when he watched Prayers for Bobby with his foster dad, Stephen, and siblings. It adds some nuisance to the story. Not everyone who is a Christian is completely irredeemable, and the best way to help them is to educate them. I definitely feel like Stephen could change and did change. Whether he will stay that way once his wife regains control of him remains to be seen. It also broke my heart when Skyler had to say goodbye to his siblings.
Then we get to the middle of the book when Sklyar meets his third foster family, the Kelleys. This was okay, if not a little too good to be true. I did immensely enjoy Dale and Liara. I love that their relationship is so open and the way they talk to CK and Skyler, and how supportive they are. It's from about the point in the story when Skylar starts going out with Kalin that things begin to fall apart for me. I do like Kalin, and they make a cute couple, but the story seemed to stumble here and made the last bit of the book feel like it lasted forever, and I ended up losing some interest in the characters. Some of the dialogue, especially once Skylar makes it to the Kelley household, is a bit much. Teenagers do not talk or even act in some of the ways described.
I did listen to this as an audiobook, and the narration was a bit much at times. It was hard to decipher between many of the male voices, which seemed very stereotypical surfer dudes. The female voices came out as overly Valley Girl in most cases. Giggles were also a little weird.
Overall, I did enjoy this book and took many great moments from it.

An adventurous romp
Revisado: 04-08-23
Dark is an adventurous romp through the pipe system of Dun's planet, known as The River. Dun struggles with his dreams, which he fears may be prophetic, and his mission to discover what has happened to a neighboring clan. With his best friend Padj and their guide Myrch, Dun is exposed to brilliant new discoveries and horrific dangers. He also meets a brilliant alchemist, Tali, who gives him new perspectives. There were a few times the story lulled, but all in all, Dark is an enjoyable read and a world I'd like to know more about via future books! The narrator did a fabulous job. I was able to understand and decipher who was speaking easily.

Historia
The Quarrel of Sword and Bone was a death sentence for anyone who stepped into the arena with the deranged Queen, whose soul had crisped to frost in an age long since past. Sixteen-year-old Helen Bell understood tragedy better than most kids growing up—she knew what it was like to wear clothes from donation bins and be mocked by the beautiful girls in school. She thought these brutal experiences made her ready for anything.

An imaginative and adventurous masterpiece!
Revisado: 03-17-23
A Soul as Cold As Frost is an imaginative and adventurous masterpiece! The book is a mix of Narnia, Wonderland, and Howl's Moving Castle, and in the best way!
Helen receives a mysterious orb from an even more mysterious stranger. What happens next is unexpected and wonderous! She can now see a whole new world, but with this power comes danger! A witch named Maura Rouge is seeking her with vicious intentions. Luckily, Helen meets Zane, who happens to be my favorite character! Zane is sworn to protect Helen, who learns she is something called a truth carrier. Can Helen survive The Quarrel of Sword and Bone? Will she ever get home again? Can she ride Cornelius Britely's train forever? (Gosh, I wish! I would love to!) Only time will tell!
If you're looking for a magical read, I highly recommend this book! The characters are fleshed out. The story is fast-paced and unpredictable. The world is unique but also somehow familiar. I absolutely loved it and need more! Off to the sequel I go!

An interesting and imaginative story!
Revisado: 02-14-23
This is a difficult book to review. I really enjoyed the story. The concept is amazing, and the storytelling is crisp and well-paced. Still, it was very hard to like the love interest, Wyran, until very late in the book because of the abusive nature of his relationship with Lillian, the book's female protagonist. He made her do some downright deplorable things, not to mention all the physical abuse she suffered from his tribesman. I just didn't get enough of his backstory to warrant his actions enough for me to forgive such trespasses. We get a glimpse of his past, but it is not quite fleshed out. I look forward to reading the second book to possibly see things from his point of view. I do love the world that Knox has created and Lillian's character, who is both cunning and strong. I've already pre-ordered book two!
The narrator did a phenomenal job. I could clearly understand them. They used the right inflections and seamlessly immersed me in the story.

Great narration, but story is hard to follow.
Revisado: 02-08-23
While I enjoyed the characters in the book, and the main premise was brilliant, the writing style was very hard to follow at times, and I found myself going back over sections again and again in order to understand what was actually going on. As such, it took me a very long time to finish the book, and I started losing interest about halfway through. It did pick up a bit more at the end, but the whole thing reads a bit more like an old fable than an adventurous Fantasy story. There are some great moments of humor that come in at just the right times; I just wish the writing style wasn't so meandering, as this could have gotten a few more stars from me had it been more straightforward.
I will add that the narration for the book was phenomenal! Easy to follow and expressive!

A very unique and compelling story!
Revisado: 01-29-23
Dark and Devious is a very unique and compelling story; however, the narration for this book is too monotonous. I tried several times and at several different speeds, but there was just no emotion in the performance, and I ended up buying the ebook to read instead. I am glad that I did get the ebook because I would have missed out on an awesome story.
I loved Finley and his evolution throughout the book. He became so much stronger emotionally, and there are many times when he melted my heart with his thoughtfulness. The scene where he gifts Rosion a new chair, in particular, had me tearing up!
Elair broke my heart! He was such a sweet character, so swoon-worthy! And I feel so bad for him. He obviously loves Rosion deeply, but we all know she had to end up with Finley!
Rosion is a strong protagonist. She is a very honorable character, and I admire that about her. Time and again, she makes hard decisions for the good of all. She stuck to her oaths to protect the humans, even when it would have been easier to leave them to their fate. She accepted her place among her people and became a formidable and just Reagent. I absolutely adore her.
I cannot wait to read more about these characters!

Awesome Premise, But Falls Short
Revisado: 10-18-22
I really wanted to love this book. The promise of a fae romance that wasn't filled with tons of spicy scenes intrigued me. I prefer books with great plots and secondary romance, so this seemed right up my alley. The premise of this book was brilliant, and the magical creatures and the magical world were interesting, but the book suffers from repetition and lots of telling rather than showing with some insta-love thrown in there too.
There were no erotic scenes, which is what was promised, but there was a strange obsession with describing her breasts every few minutes, and she didn't seem to have much depth other than having curves, big boobs, and a yearning to escape back home. Some passages were just awkward, giving to second-hand embarrassment.
The performance of this book would have been better with a female voice or dual narrators. The current narrator goes over the top quite often when trying to do Rosalie's voice.
Overall, I feel like the book was just okay. Not one I would pick up again or read a second book about. A skilled developmental editor could probably help get this story where it needs to be and help the author create some character depth and a more natural flow.
