I struggled to finish this book. Numerous things I found irritating, so I have to leave it to other reviewers to tell you what you're supposed to get from it. I'm fond of quiet stories, but this one is so sad, boring and monotone. The author even reads it in a sort of sing song monotone. So MANY lists of odd song titles!
I don't understand all the good reviews, and I'm very glad I only paid a couple of dollars for this book.

The book was OK. Nothing new or original here, though. If you've ever read "The Shining" and "The Exorcist" you're bound to notice a lot of similarities. Jack and Jesse are both frustrated writer wannabes who have made their living as teachers. Both are ex drinkers who fall off the wagon and become angrier and angrier as they are possessed. Each character even has the habit of rubbing his face when agitated. Really!?
The similarities between Georgiana and Reagan Are just as obvious. So, a very predictable story and a mediocre narrator.

I've read almost all of Robin Cook's novels and always enjoy them. Unlike a lot of reviewers, I also enjoyed this one very much. I'll agree it's a different than his others, but I don't see that as necessarily bad. I like a good ghost story and enjoy medical thrillers even more. I found the combination of the two very interesting. (I even immediately bought the book on Bellevue referred to in the author's note.)
I'm in my 60s, and have read a lot of books over the years. Seldom does an ending surprise me, but this one did. All in all, I really liked this book.

Though I didn't particularly like any of the characters, this did end up being a good story with a bit of a twist at the end. I enjoyed it.

First of all, I'd like to say that the female narrator did a fine job in my opinion. I think those reviewers who believe she did a less than adequate job don't take into consideration that Mary has the personality of a Stepford wife. Because of this, I think the narration is pretty spot on-at least as far as the Mary is concerned.
As for the story itself, I wasn't overly impressed. It did keep me mildly interested, but I found it pretty predictable. On the plus side, at least there were no dangling modifiers. So many authors are guilty of using them and they sound ridiculous. It really makes me wonder if anyone proofreads.

This book is well written. That said, I don't quite understand all the five star reviews. Did it have its funny moments? Yes. Did I feel empathy for the author? Definitely. However, I found her narration irritating. It's read a little too quickly and (with the exception of when someone else is speaking), in a monotone. Maybe the author thought narrating it herself would be cathartic, but it comes off as "let me hurry and get through this as quickly as possible without seeming too emotional". That's understandable, because this is apparently the way she often dealt with the problems in her life. In my humble opinion, though, she would've been better served to hire one of the many excellent narrators out there to read the book. I'm sure writing it was harrowing and difficult for her, but her narration does not do it justice.

The narrator was great, and, as always, so was Kevin O'Brien's story. The one little thing I found irritating was that seemingly every character had to "work up a smile". Over, and over, and over again lol.

I keep wondering if proofreading is a thing of the past. That said, hilarious dangling modifiers and a gossipy tone aside, this is a pretty good story.

I would’ve given this book all five stars except for two aspects that were irritating. One of the 3 narrators reads in a very emotionless voice. Also, the word “said” is vastly overused in the dialogue. How about words like, “Replied”, “Asked“, “stated “? Even “screamed” would’ve been appropriate many times. There are so many creative ways to end a sentence of dialogue, but this author apparently knows none of them. Even all the interrogative sentences were ended with the word “said”. Annoying! Really good story , though.
