Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Sad when it was over!

Loved every minute. The performance was wonderful. The narrator captured the essence of the Count beautifully. I found the story delightful and uplifting in addition to being clever and witty.

Beautiful and compelling.
Revisado: 04-04-19
I found this book on sale, and I am so grateful! It is, perhaps, the best book I have listened to in years. To be honest, it took me a couple of chapters to get into the story and get used to the author/narrator's cadence. After that, I was hooked - in love with the writing, the story, the beautifully drawn characters, and the author's performance. I had that sad feeling of abandonment when it was over, combined with gratitude for having taken the journey, and the thrill of knowing I could read (or listen to) more by this remarkable author. I was delighted by his poetic, painterly but not overly wordy prose. Absolutely beautiful. Five enthusiastic stars. And a great big thank you to the author for pouring his soul into his art.

Loved it! I'm the parent of 3 boys. My husband and 26 yr old son both recommended it and I will recommend it to my 22 and 15 year olds. There are many important lessons about compassion and understanding woven within a compelling well told story. Highly recommended fpr humans of all ages.

Historia
The exquisitely crafted stories in Anthony Doerr's acclaimed debut collection take listeners from the African coast to the pine forests of Montana to the damp moors of Lapland, charting a vast physical and emotional landscape. Doerr explores the human condition in all its varieties - metamorphosis, grief, fractured relationships, and slowly mending hearts - and conjures nature in both its beautiful abundance and crushing power.

beautiful writing and engaging characters
Revisado: 10-12-18
Stunning images succinctly crafted. I enjoyed the wide variety of beautifully drawn characters. Each story was equally compelling in a totally different way. Eaxh character came from a different baxkgeound but all were easy to relate to and care about. Ifound the narrator a delight to listen to. A very special book and a terrific performance.

Historia
A literary icon sometimes seen as a bridge between the Beat Generation and the hippies, Ken Kesey scored an unexpected hit with his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His successful follow-up, Sometimes a Great Notion, was also transformed into a major motion picture, directed by and starring Paul Newman. Here, Oregon’s Stamper family does what it can to survive a bitter strike dividing their tiny logging community. And as tensions rise, delicate family bonds begin to fray and unravel.

unexpected pleasure
Revisado: 11-01-17
This was a book chosen for our book club. I considered it to be a book I would not read on my own because of the length, dense writing style and subject matter. Because of the length I decided to listen to it as I knew I wouldn't have time to finish if I were reading it. I'm so glad I did. The performance was wonderful, the writing is brilliant, and I found the story to be very engaging once I got into it. I still think about some of the characters weeks later. I do think that having the story read out loud made a huge difference. The preponderance of dialogue in various dialects as well as the shifting points of view would make for a challenging read. The audible version made it a pleasure to listen to. I was sad when it ended.
