Dina's Sister Maude
Revisado: 10-23-24
This story isn’t about Dina, but her sister Maud and niece Helen, and it isn’t first-person as the others have been. But it is solely from Maude’s POV. Different narrator too. Action/sf/paranormal with more romance than previous books. Lots of aliens, fighting, details (except the romance).

Gothic Mystery
Revisado: 09-06-24
Lots of twists and turns and surprises, along with excellently-developed characters. It’s really two stories, one of the main character’s life (includes a romantic element) and the other the main mystery. Not a horror story, though it’s listed as such. Narrator Olivia Vinall was excellent with the various accents and voices, pacing, and personalities she imbued the characters with. Satisfying ending too. Will definitely look for more from both her and this author.

Barrayaran Imperial Auditor Miles Vorkosigan can hardly disapprove—he’s been cheating death his whole life, on the theory that turnabout is fair play. But when a Kibou-daini cryocorp—an immortal company whose job it is to shepherd its all-too-mortal frozen patrons into an unknown future—attempts to expand its franchise into the Barrayaran Empire, Emperor Gregor dispatches his top troubleshooter, Miles, to check it out.

Another Great Listen!
Revisado: 08-12-24
This was a wonderful story with an interesting plot and lots of fabulous, very well-developed characters, including a young boy. Several side stories fit in with the main seamlessly, enhancing the whole. The Aftermaths (mini epilogs from various characters) did contain a final—rather sad—note. Grover Gardner was wonderful, pitch-perfect as always.

The Saga Continues
Revisado: 07-23-24
You do need to listen to/read the first book in this trilogy before this one. Moved from coming-of-age to young-adult about half-way through. I admit a greater affection for the former, but that’s a general genre choice (all media), and not about how the book was written. Gripping, absorbing, I often thought about it when I wasn’t listening. Lots more magic and less darkness/nastiness than in the first book. Narrator is good, easy to understand, but all of the (mature) men sounded the same to me.

Felicity believes this man can help her, but she has no money of her own to make the trip. The Marvelous Montagues
Revisado: 05-19-24
are back! This is Felicity’s story, though Monty and Percy are here and there, along with two new wonderful women to share her adventures. Unlike the first book, this is not a romance. Actually, it leans more into a feminist manifesto, but is so interesting, exciting, and refreshing, I was happy to be swept along on the journey. Moira Quirk is an excellent narrator and perfect for the story. One final point: I appreciated that Felicity truly acted her age, brilliant, but lacking maturity, and showed growth through the story. Will definitely be back for the third serving and look forward to more books by this author, the narrator as well.

Historia
There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

Pleasant Diversion
Revisado: 05-06-24
Everything I’ve come to expect from this cozy period (1921) mystery with a light side of farce. An atypical setting comprised of a series-typical large cast. This one is a bit more emotional than previous installments, but not mushy. Sam Dewhurst-Phillips handles all the accents and voices with his usual skill.

Entirely Engrossing
Revisado: 03-30-24
How much of that is Robert Glenister’s amazing voices (and how deeply they convey characters’ personalities) and how much is the author’s equally amazing story-telling talent, I really can’t say. Warning: dark themes (rape and torture), the kind that keep people up at night, especially women. I felt some of the detail was unnecessary. Normally, it would have been too much for me, but I make exceptions from time to time, and this series is one of them. Despite the length (almost 32 hours!), and how well everything was tied up at the end (though I didn’t get the final reference), I was sorry it ended. But now I can watch it on TV :>).

It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Contemporary Dystopian Urban Fantasy, Part 1
Revisado: 03-30-24
I found it hard to commit for the first couple hours, as I avoid these dark, dystopian reads/listens (but this came highly recommended by a trusted source) and one of the characters was annoying at the the beginning, but she grew out of it. The fantasy and hopeful elements kept me reading until I became attached to the characters. Be prepared, some die, and some of the violence (of which there is plenty) is graphic (but no graphic love scenes). This is not a romance, though there is romance in it. Nora Roberts is a fabulous story teller and great with characters, so I did get sucked in deep eventually. There was no middle ground between good and evil here, no gray areas or conversions. And while I do appreciate villains I can truly hate, I did miss the element of redemption. The ending was hopeful, even romantic. I’ll have to read the rest, of course. Narrator did a decent job with voices.

Historia
Hank was a dying breed on the space station Belvaille. The criminal gangs that had once made their homes there were forced out by the corporations that had taken over since the facility became an Independent Protectorate. Instead of the gentlemanly gang wars that had once dominated the scene, and made Hank's services prized as a negotiator, the city was now plagued by the clash of corporate armies using heavy weapons. Even tanks roamed the streets regularly.

Sarcastic, creative, funny, violent
Revisado: 03-01-24
Not words I’d normally put together in one line about a book, but there you go. This second book in the series contains a lot more carnage than the first, along with the serious loss and damage that is war. But of course it doesn’t linger there. I found the plot/mystery/s, if wild, more interesting than in the first book. I’m not sure how I’d feel about it if anyone but Liam Owen was narrating, he really makes it. The tone is perfect, right down to the chapter numbers.

Dramatic and intense urban fantasy
Revisado: 03-01-24
The incredible creativity and depth more than made up for the over-the-top drama and occasional convenient situation. The same in-depth, detailed world building (including the various races (with their muscular bodies, not including the (literal) foxes)), their clothes, the decor, the food—which made me hungry, but you get the idea—as in the previous book (which you should not skip). The narrator, Renee Raudman, did a wonderful job with the many, many voices, though here and there she would drop her volume and I had to go back to catch what she said. Yes, she does sound a bit mature for the part, but that’s pretty easy to adjust to. She runs with the drama aspect, which was a bit harder for me, but in the end I think it suited well. I enjoyed this book a bit more than the first and am looking forward to the next one. 4.5 rounded to 5 for both story and performance.
