Historia
The world’s food supply grows aggressively, occupying every inch of earth, no matter how inhospitable. World hunger is averted. Humanity flourishes. RC-714 is digested, absorbed…and passed on. The Change affects small fast-breeding mammals first. They multiply with the same aggressive speed as the ExoGen plants, but an insatiable hunger drives them to violence. A war between species breaks out. When RC-714 reaches humanity, along with every other large creature on the planet, civilization implodes.

Entertaining.
Revisado: 11-14-24
There are a lot of fiction titles I involuntarily tune out, but this kept my attention the whole time. I don’t care for Ann and the jokes the kids share between each other, but that’s the low point of the book and not overly significant.

Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth's terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity's great empire fell, and the program's decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it's been waiting for them.

Excellent all around.
Revisado: 08-17-24
I read a lot, particularly history, economics, and technological innovation pieces because it’s pertinent to my job. As a result, fiction that focuses on a single character often feels underwhelming for me in terms of scale. This series observes a narrative over the broad stokes of time that engrossed me throughout. It uses the same names to represent similar characters over that timeline and doing so provides continuity that may otherwise be lost if focusing on a wider array of names. I truly have no criticism for this work.

Series continues to be good.
Revisado: 05-18-24
It keeps a similar tone to the first book and does a good job of telling a connected story. It doesn’t leave a lot of room for the reader’s own interpretations and hands you the characters internal thoughts, but it also does so to explain away any possible plot holes. I didn’t care for how the beginning of the book leans heavily on bullying, which is a common theme throughout so many books that are set in schools. It just shows how ubiquitous this problem must be in our society because there are so many who can write about the experience of being needlessly bullied.

Well told and not too long.
Revisado: 05-16-24
I enjoyed that It told a compelling story in a short runtime. There were some moments where it lets you make your own judgments and others where it hands it straight to you. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the rest of the series was available for free, so hopefully the quality stays at this level. Having dipped into the second book I’m satisfied that the tone and length so far have remained consistent. This could have easily been lumped together into one 50 hour monstrosity of a recording that would keep you from ever starting it, and I prefer that it’s broken down the way it is.

Good but hard to follow.
Revisado: 01-15-24
I enjoyed this book and felt it captured the cyberpunk atmosphere pretty well. I’m torn about its overall quality because personally I found it really hard to follow precisely what was going on. There are a lot of characters and scene transitions. This isn’t the first book I’ve had that problem with but it’s one of the few books I’ve listened to more than once to try and get a grasp on all the different things that are happening because it is good enough that I want to get it better, just have trouble tracking it all.

Historia
Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus, we don't like to talk, or even think, about the extent of our selfishness. This is "the elephant in the brain".

Very Good. Some moments of repetition.
Revisado: 06-23-23
It’s an entertaining and well written story that considers all the angles. There were a few times where one character repeatedly voices similar objections to a plan and why it cannot work where things become somewhat dull. Overall that is the low point of the book and the rest of it remains competent and compelling.

Historia
In A Decent Life, May leads listeners through the traditional philosophical bases of a number of arguments about what ethics asks of us, then he develops a more reasonable and achievable way of thinking about them, one that shows us how we can use philosophical insights to participate in the complicated world around us. He explores how we should approach the many relationships in our lives - with friends, family, animals, people in need - through the use of a more forgiving, if no less fundamentally serious, moral compass.

When it comes to what we believe, humans see what they want to see. In other words, we have what Julia Galef calls a "soldier" mindset. From tribalism and wishful thinking, to rationalizing in our personal lives and everything in between, we are driven to defend the ideas we most want to believe - and shoot down those we don't.

Historia
Philip K. Dick’s classic short story tells the story of Douglas Quail, an unfulfilled bureaucrat who dreams of visiting Mars, but can't afford the trip. Luckily, there is Rekal Incorporated, a company that lets everyday stiffs believe they’ve been on incredible adventures. The only problem is that when technicians attempt a memory implant of a spy mission to Mars, they find that real memories of just such a trip are already in Quail's brain. Suddenly, Quail is running for his life from government agents, but his memories might make him more of a liability than he is worth.
