Historia
One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to relive or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil, and 13-year-old son, Joe. In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed. He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared.

life on the reservation with a terrific narrator.
Revisado: 01-28-13
excellent book about an indian woman's rape and the effects it has on not just her life but the life around her. Contrary to some people's opinion about the reader, I really loved the narrater, and thought the story would not have been as rich without him. He is an indian himself, and it gives the lives he speaks of an aura of authenticity. There are many insights into what life can be like on a reservation, its isolation, poverty, and what happens to some people because of it.
there is a legal snafu concerning tribal versus U.S. law, and that becomes the crux of the idea of justice -
highly recommend this book.

Historia
Charles Dickens: A Life gives full measure to Dickens's heroic stature - his huge virtues both as a writer and as a human being - while observing his failings in both respects with an unblinking eye. Renowned literary biographer Claire Tomalin crafts a story worthy of Dickens's own pen, a comedy that turns to tragedy as the very qualities that made him great - his indomitable energy, boldness, imagination, and showmanship - finally destroyed him.

thought this was an excellent overview of Dickens life. It really gave me a feel for the streets and milieu of his particular period of life. I enjoyed it especially when Ms. Tomalin reviewed his various novels and showed what was going on in his life at the same time. I had a glimpse of Dickens as a flawed, amazing man.

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

solid characterizations
Revisado: 01-09-12
This book is a family saga, with a few true events and personalities thrown in, such as henry ford and his labor practices.
Almost all the characters in this novel are so well delineated, that it is hard to pick just one that actually stands out, because the writer makes it easy to visualize them all, and the reader, although somewhat dramatic, has the accents down pat.
the central person is Cal or Callie, and
the implication is that the genetic accident of Cal's birth is responsible for the hermaphroditism that results. A good argument for tolerance, and acceptance, of "gender challenged" people, actually.
These generations of a family, are detailed and vividly expressed, told with humor and compassion of foibles and aspects of daily life. It has a few passages with almost explicit sex, however, the majority of the book is so true to life and intelligently written that I found it quite entertaining and certainly recommend this so highly.

hilarious
Revisado: 11-06-11
What did you like best about this story?
the best thing, although the story is well crafted, are the characters, some normal, some really not normal, a funhouse ride.
What does Stephen Hoye bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
funny, crude and rude.

beautiful language
Revisado: 11-06-11
If you like the language and writing of Dickens or Austin, you will like this writing. why say "not likely" when you can say "doubtful in the extreme"? so much better. An absorbing victorian mystery, with vivid personalities. the melodrama makes it all the more humorous, but really such a good story and memorable characters.

what it was really like after Katrina

Can't recommend this enough. So amazing, the things that went on after Katrina, the red tape and failures of common sense. a well written account of one man's experience, truly horrible, but makes for engrossing reading.

a real treat for artists, and a spellbinding thriller. Thought this was the best Michael Gruber that is available on audible. After reading this, I downloaded the rest of his work, but still think this is the best. the details about art and conservation are spot on with only one exception that any art restorer would know is bogus. However, the story is one to keep you guessing and riveted. loved it.

western low key mystery
Revisado: 11-06-11
I happen to adore these western mysteries, and have read all of Craig Johnson, may his books continue to be offered on audible... The narrator, George Guidall is excellent, and perfectly suited to these books. the only caveat is that Mr. Johnson employs, the phrase, "I thought about it" a little too often. Otherwise, these books are all terrific. the sherif of Wyoming (mythical county, but real locations) is honest, flawed, and noble. love him.

western life with a true feel
Revisado: 11-06-11
If you need a happy ending, don't go for this one. If you like a well written, detailed, engrossing story then this will certainly suffice. The writing is beautiful, with humor and the harsh reality of tough western pioneer life well expressed.
