Slow BUT well written
Revisado: 10-18-24
This is a slow-paced yet beautifully written novel that blends supernatural elements with rich historical details. The deliberate pacing allows the reader to fully immerse in the atmospheric tension of 19th-century Mexico, making it a novel of moments rather than fast action. While it does explore themes of survival, love, and danger, the story stays clear of over-sexualized tropes, focusing instead on character development and the eerie presence of the vampires. A great read for those who appreciate a well-crafted narrative with a haunting backdrop.

Intriguing Thought Piece
Revisado: 01-27-24
The concept of using medications to enhance a person, rather than just treating illness, is intriguing. It's worth further discussion and thought, even more than 30 years since this book was written. I've encountered similar debates regarding stimulants, a drug class used to treat ADHD but with potential enhancing properties for those without the illness. The ethical implications are complex, making books like this one timeless and thought-provoking.

What will become of our self-destructed planet? The answer shatters all expectations in this subversive speculation from the Hugo Award - winning author of the Broken Earth trilogy. An explorer returns to gather information from a climate-ravaged Earth that his ancestors, and others among the planet’s finest, fled centuries ago. The mission comes with a warning: A graveyard world awaits him. But so do those left behind - hopeless and unbeautiful wastes of humanity who should have died out ages ago.

I loved the performance

I'm loving this series! The third person perspective was used very well in this story. I enjoyed how the story reinforced my appreciation for the things we deem to be unnecessary or unless.

Well written, but the story made me cringe.
Revisado: 07-29-23
The imagery from the story was top notch, but I didn't like the story. The excessive privilege that oozed from the main character was too much for me to stomach. However, the story did help me to appreciate the perceived power of having no options despite many options being present.

Historia
We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

Quit by Blaming Men
Revisado: 10-27-22
I couldn't finish this audiobook because of how saturated it was with blaming the patriarchy, -isms, capitalism, the government and more along those lines. Although there were some great points in the book, I couldn't get pass the projection. Maybe the chapters after included something a reader could use to create change, but after 2 hours of woke propaganda, I had to return.

Finally!
Revisado: 08-08-22
I've been excepting that I will likely have a c-section for my next birth. Despite c-sections occuring for about 20% of American births, this was the only book I could readily find to lend some encouragement or give some voice to c-section mothers. It's just another example of how women tear each other down in their pursuits to fight the man or go against the system. We neglect the people behind that 20%. Although my particular situation was not addressed in any of the essays, I was so happy to hear part of my story and know that those women were finally being heard. What freedom?! I hope that we can have more publications that recognize the frequency of c-sections and focus on helping mothers cope instead of feeling shame for something that wasn't totally in their control.

Great Book! Time to Practice!
Revisado: 08-05-22
I felt the audiobook was a great format for this book. The narrator is a man, but I found his voice to be soothing. However, I appreciated that the meditations were done by a woman. The bulk of the book is centered around stopping the fear surrounding childbirth. They achieve this through education. Thus, the book was like a mobile birthing class. The one downside is that the book's content is based in Europe and they operate slightly differently than we do. Nevertheless, the principles are the same. Another downside was that I had to manually take notes of which chapters had meditations at the end of them, which meditations were recommended for daily use, and which chapters were only a meditation. Once this was noted, I felt the helpfulness of this audiobook increased in folds. I hope you find this book as helpful as I did for preparing for an upcoming labor.
