David Mitchell is a very funny man. He is also brilliant. The combination of fascinating, well-researched, well-written history read with Mitchell's patented dry delivery makes for a wonderful book. I thought I knew a lot about English history but I learned of so many fascinating people thanks to this. But be warned that this is a book you really need to listen to. There's a lot of information and so many individuals in this book that if you don't pay attention, you will probably get lost. If you're looking for a casual, "can tune in and out" listen, this isn't it. But it's absolutely worth listening to. Informative and funny.

I adore David Mitchell and this insight into his life and career is delightful and fascinating. I especially enjoyed his university years when he talks about his experience with The Footlights and his many trips to Edinburgh in an attempt to get an agent and become professionally funny. It's full of his charmingly self-deprecating humor and many fascinating stories about the processes of comedy. Wonderfully addictive.

A really lovely adaptation. Of course some of the best bits are missing because it's only a 2-hour production. But the performances are really wonderful. Amanda Hale is especially effective as the wise and wonderful Elinor. The rest of the cast is equally strong -- with each being as stupid, selfish, sweet, or sensitive as their character demands. My one problem with this recording is that Amanda Hale's voice is often much too quiet compared to the others. I blame the sound guy. But it's a shame because her performance is truly captivating.

A wonderful cast does justice to this enduring and endearing character. The scripts do a very good job of capturing the flavor and keeping the plots cohesive. Andrew Sachs is a delightful Father Brown, just the right blend of clever and fuzzy. The supporting casts are uniformly strong and overall it's a light and frothy delight.

Can you picture a more perfect Eyesore than Geoffrey Palmer? Or a more adorable Tigger than Jane Horrocks? I don't think I ever heard these characters in any particular voice when I first read them. But I will forever hereafter hear this cast when I revisit my beloved Pooh in the future.

One of Dame Agatha's lesser known stories, this one is set in Dartmoor during a freezing winter storm. A mysterious message received during a seance leads to a suspicion that a murder has been committed and points to a weak-minded nephew. His ingenious and resourceful fiancee enlists an ambitious reporter to aid her in finding out the truth.

There are some wonderful vocal performances in this one, especially the woman playing Katherine Grey. It's not John Moffat as Poirot, and while the actor in question is very talented, I prefer Moffat's take on our favorite Belgian detective. It's a wonderful story involving jewel thieves, a millionaire's daughter, and murder among the rich set in the south of France. A stylish adaptation.

A typically skilled performance by the wonderful Hugh Fraser highlights this story with one of Dame Agatha's most intriguing motives for murder. With many of the hallmarks of her classic stories: a comfortable house with an interesting collection of suspects, a wily and astute police inspector, and enough red herrings to keep things interesting. Superintendent Battle is a surprisingly sympathetic and creative detective and fits the story perfectly. No Poirot, but plenty of clues (both real and planted).

A typically ingenious Christie story with Poirot in attendance at a weekend party that includes murder over a round of pre-dinner drinks. When a similar crime takes place a few weeks later, Poirot joins in the hunt for the kiler. The wonderful John Moffatt shines as the detective with the best little grey cells in the business. The supportive cast is equally talented and it all makes for a nicely scripted, tightly paced story.

In this conclusion to Nora Robert's captivating Sign of Seven series, the three couples have come together to plan the ultimate showdown against evil at the clearing where the Pagan Stone lives. The question is if one of them will need to sacrifice themselves to finally defeat evil. The romantic focus in this one is on Gage and Sibyl, the worldly duo whose connection to the fight is strictly due to the people involved, rather than the town they seek to protect. It's nicely atmospheric and deliciously sexy; the latter enhanced by the entirely yummy vocal performance by Dan John Miller. (Who could probably make reading the phone book sound sensual.) You will need to have either read or listened to the first two books in the series in order for all of this to make sense, but it's one of her best trilogies.
