action packed and no overdose of 50,000 km to confuse things.
Revisado: 04-07-25
the sequel in the Scourwind Series, in what surely must be planned to be a trilogy, has familiar characters, biting banter, and fed in with the "what's next" puzzles. This story moves right along with several challenges. [No spoilers here]
Anyway, I found this entry in the series well worth the credit (although if volume 3 doesn't show up, I might take that back. I hate investing time in an orphaned series.)

excellent main character(s)
Revisado: 10-26-24
It's a compelling story of obscure origin, difficult trials and life threatening obstacles. Also, all the main characters are females, without being some heavy-handed, didactic tome.
I enjoyed the story and the performance. It's a series, and so now I'm moving on to the next book. If I had more energy, I'd try to make this a more gripping review.
If you aren't convinced to give this book, *The Changeling* a try, I sincerely apologize to the author because this is a good book that repays your reading time.

Historia
Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

A Self-paced Course in Murder
Revisado: 12-23-23
This is another great work by Rupert Holmes. Memorable characters, humor, and suspense make up this novel. I cared about the main students, and hated the characters identified as "to be deleted."
The time frame of the story is late 1940s-early 1950s, partly because more current times CSI evidence makes getting away with murder significantly more difficult.
Anyway, entertaining, funny and touching--if you'd believe it about murder school! I'll definitely make this one of the books I read more about than just this first time!

Historia
Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

Fun read. Easy, yet still has a mystery to keep you going. Clever main character that is competent without being an harridan or constantly needing affirmation.

Historia
Sherman Holmes has officially settled into his new city, and the World's Greatest Detective Agency has opened its doors. While his put-upon partner, Watson, would be happy to keep the jobs as simple as missing pets, when a worried worker with an outlandish tale of ghosts walks in, there's no stopping Sherman from taking the case. Now, the new duo must investigate a local "haunted" tourist site where the scares are going off-script and otherworldly interference is suspected.

Drew Hayes Does Good story again
Revisado: 06-01-21
This is a fun book about Sherman Holmes and Watson. As the 2nd book in the series, Haunted Haunted House reveals more quirks of Holmes and Watson.
Holmes does his brash, arguably "crazy like a fox", persona; Watson tries to cope with being out of the spy business and with being a social shield and body guard to Sherman. He does all of this while trying to find a missing cat and while tracking down a ghost or something in a haunted mansion that's the main stop in a ghost walking tour (in a Portland, OR, neighborhood!)
Again, I like it a lot for its humor and mystery. But I do have to wonder how long Drew Hayes can keep up the personal setting between Holmes and Watson, and when does the situation become unsupportable: like "how long can the Beverly Hillbillies remain ignorant of city ways while living right among them"?
My recommendation is get this book, especially if you have read the first book in the series. But be wary of other numbers as he writes them. I think at some point he won't be able to sustain the necessary weirdness of the Holmes-Watson partnership.

It proves a brief but fateful encounter.

A Visit from Clement well worth your time.
Revisado: 10-23-20
I liked this book bunches. Clement is himself, and a welcome appearance he is for this reader. In terms of the familiar, he does the same outside the lines assistance to the (in this case) narrator that he did in the other volumes.
The specific problem and the details of the help are different. But anyone who reads a series values and expects this: in a mystery series, there will be at least one murder, the sleuth will solve it relating to police procedures, either outside as an amateur or inside/around as a police detective (of whatever rank).
Clement is fun, and ironically comforting in an uncomfortable way. Having said that, I didn't like his mission-person. The narrator is to me the least sympathetic of all four of Clement's aid-recipients. Normally I'm a push-over for an unreliable narrator. But in this case, I thought he was a jerk and self-deluded. That was funny considering he thought Clement was needing mental health treatment.
Anyway, the book is well worth the cost and the time. What else can you ask of any book?

Historia
Presented by Stephen Fry, as heard on BBC Radio 4. 1. Rhetoric: It was once a noble oratorical art. Now, rhetoric means the misleading language of politicians and dictators. Stephen tries to restore its original meaning, with the help of three very different speeches. 2. Spelling: English spelling is famously irregular. As Stephen puts it: 'I before e except after c. Weird!' The history of spelling is strewn with attempts to simplify it. How did it get so difficult?

Block said he didn't want to republish
Revisado: 07-31-20
Block didn't want to republish--they should have listened. This was as much about the narrator's sexcapades, seasoned by his tragic past, as it was about crime and his own personal danger.
I thought the narrator (character, not reader) was a bit of a d1¢|<. At least two of his encounters are a bit rapey. And even when he is in love, it's 80% below his waist, although he presents it like it's True Romance.
He and the bad guys call the woman he's in love with, "stupid". Ugh. He apologized, but how many times have real life abusers done similar and gone back to abuse again?
Anyway, Ted, the narrator & main character, moves up to NYC because he's depressed about his broken marriage. While he's trying to get over things he cannot change, he has some adventures. To tell any more of the events would constitute spoilers.
There are bad guys, gangsters, bullies, and conmen. Sexually available women. But I wished for more story.

Historia
"I’m James Taylor and I’m a professional autobiographer", says the celebrated folk singer at the start of this tender audio memoir. Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

Short, but moving.
Revisado: 02-01-20
Loved it. Almost all of the events here I didn't know about. It's brief on former romances, and that's a good thing. It stops before his relationship and marriage to Carly (which is natural since it's about his first 21 years). The description of his trials and lucky breaks makes me feel for him.
I still think he was a d:@# for choosing drugs over Carly Simon back in the day. But his presentation of his First 21 Years makes me think that sometimes a person can't help being a d:@#. Even his father before him. Again, the Carly period isn't covered, but everyone knows it's coming.
Over all, a very good introduction to James Taylor. If it sounds like he's reading some of the time (it does), nevertheless it seems like he's talking with you too.
