We’re supposed to believe a 7year old girl who is abandoned by family can learn to read in a year, can grow up to be a highly functioning adult, will forgive the family who abandoned her. It goes on and on. Highly implausible. Very disappointing.

Not one likable character in this book. Their actions don't make sense - a rich guy who buys expensive wines, watches, etc. decides to ride the Greyhound across the country and loves it. Most of the motivations seem made-up, not coming from some sincere spot inside the character. Nothing rings true. Very disappointing. I don't think the author understands human nature.

Where does Amy and Isabelle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

#1

What was one of the most memorable moments of Amy and Isabelle?

that would be a spoiler

Have you listened to any of Stephanie Roberts’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

excellent reader

If you could take any character from Amy and Isabelle out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Isabelle, I'd like to sit down and talk to her. Or maybe Fat Bev. I liked all the women characters in this book.

Any additional comments?

Elizabeth Strout's characters are so real. Complicated people who do dumb stuff, make mistakes. But they are also capable of love, and those wonderful moments of real human love and insight. I find it easy to identify with all of them.

I loved this book. It was a little hard to keep all the names straight, there are multiple generations of families. (My memory for names is not good anyway.) But it was beautifully written, very interesting to read. I actually wish I had read it instead of listening, partly to be able to go back and remember who was who and partly to savor the reading experience. John Lee is a great reader, too. I felt ( to my American ear) that the accents were understandable. But they were still definitely accents that take the listener to another time and place, allowing me gain insight into people living in a world very different from the one I am in.

Lots of people seem to love this book - it depends on your taste. To me the characters were embarrassingly simple and predictable. How can a rich, spoiled white woman in 1875 think like a modern, liberal woman? The book would have made more sense if May started out with some of the attitudes of her class and upbringing, then over time learned that she was being biased and unfair. This book will not challenge you to think. The reader was good, doing her best with poor material. I wish Audible had a category for chick lit. I would like some kind of way to avoid these books, other people must be searching for them. Occasionally I buy one by mistake. It was a waste of a credit.

I was disappointed with this book. The story is predictable and simplistic. I enjoy stories about growing up in rural areas, but this one doesn't ring true. Check out "A Painted House" by John Grisham, its much better. I am not a fan of Grisham's or Baldacci's regular fare, but enjoy good biographies and auto-biographies.
