Historia
My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. I know who did this. His name is Samuel Barlow. He has pale sallow skin and red-rimmed icy-blue eyes. But no one will listen. As darkness falls and rain lashes against the window, there’s a knock at my door and I open it to see those same eyes staring back at me. It’s his mother and she says she can help me find my daughter.

What a slog
Revisado: 08-19-22
First off, hated the constantly frantic narrator.
Learned nothing, took away nothing and may have actually lost brain cells reading it. Would have been more interesting if the heroine (ugh) orchestrated the kidnapping to frame and send Samuel back to prison and out of their lives.

Historia
In this best-selling novel, Patrick D. Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need.

Florida's Forrest Gump?
Revisado: 02-14-20
As I was reading, I couldn't help but compare this family, affected by one 'novel' experience after another, to the fantastical experiences of Forrest Gump. I'm imagining a tick-box list the author used to advance his chapters... Being from Florida, I was hoping to learn some history, but not sure I learned anything.

El Greco visits the Sistine Chapel and is appalled by Michelangelo's bodies. The mystery of Rothko's refusal to finish murals for the Seagram Building in New York is blended with the story of a hospital in which a prostitute walks the halls while the narrator's husband receives chemotherapy. Alfred de Dreux visits Gericault's workshop; Gustave Courbet's devilish seascapes incite viewers "to have sex, or to eat an apple"; Picasso organizes a cruel banquet in Rousseau's honor.... All of these fascinating episodes in art history interact with the narrator's life in Buenos Aires.

Clever vignettes
Revisado: 02-14-20
As I listened to the audiobook version, I must start with the narration. Hated it. Unfortunately, the narrator can make or break a book (at least for me.) Narration was uninteresting for a book/story that really needed an interesting narrator to carry it off.
I enjoyed the artists stories/histories and how they were interwoven throughout the author's personal story. However, I would recommend the paper book over this audiobook version to get the most from the reading.

Revisado: 02-14-20
I usually read nonfiction as I find fiction so hit and miss to my interests. This book was a refreshing dip back into fiction for me. Loved the narration, storyline and presentation. I would recommend to my friends if there wasn't so much cussing...

Pollan is a good narrator in addition to writer. Lots of good information shared... led me to buying another book he referenced: 'A World History in 6Glasses' and wishlisted 'Why We Sleep.' Did not lead me to giving up coffee, tea, cola, etc.

Historia
For two thousand years, cadavers have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book: the writing, the story and the narration. What to do next? Decide how I want my remains handled when the time comes. If exploring such options are not something you feel comfortable with, you probably won't like this book.

Historia
Nearly a half century into being a feminist and legal pioneer, something funny happened to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The octogenarian won the Internet. Across America, people who weren't even born when Ginsburg made her name are tattooing themselves with her face, setting her famously searing dissents to music, and making viral videos in tribute.

Easy read with suspense
Revisado: 11-03-19
It's been a long time since I read a book where the entire narration was first-person by only one character (except for Aiden's short narration near the end.) I found it irritating to be constantly inside a constantly frantic mother's head. However, I couldn't stop listening. The suspense was there with the great pauses by the audio narrator.
The climax sequences and outcome were not realistic, and thus disappointing. I was left with questions... I also had a feeling throughout that the author was not personally familiar with pregnancy or being a mother. Her available personal bios do not mention children, so maybe my instinct was correct.

Historia
An intimate memoir in essays by an award-winning Israeli writer who travels the world, from New York to India, searching for love, belonging, and an escape from grief following the death of her father when she was a young girl. With fierce, emotional prose, Ayelet Tsabari crafts a beautiful meditation about the lengths we will travel to try to escape our grief, the universal search to find a place where we belong, and the sense of home we eventually find within ourselves.

Liked it more than I thought I would
Revisado: 08-06-19
Prior to reading, I knew little to nothing about Israel or Mizrahi Jews. Now I feel like I have extended family through Ms. Tsabari. Describing one of her beaus, she remarks on a particular pronunciation of his which she found attractive (as in cute); I found her accent and pronunciations attractive (as in I wanted more, so kept listening!)

Historia
From one of Outside magazine's "Literary All-Stars" comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983. In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history.

Never expected to enjoy it as much as I did!
Revisado: 12-06-18
Needed to read this book for a work-related project. I've spent some time in the Grand Canyon but never on the river, so I was hoping to learn some things. And, boy, did I ever. Near the beginning, narration was going over the technical workings of hydrodynamics. "Boring. I hope it gets better..." And it did pretty fast. This part was laying the groundwork for what I needed to understand about the river and the stories that lay ahead. I enjoyed most the author's vocabulary and punctuations of humor. I enjoyed least the narration; I think a younger voice would have better suited the story. The chapters are well laid out, feeding you knowledge and building upon it as you make your way through its 17 hours. I learned far more than I ever expected based on the title.
