Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

The value of watching and listening
Revisado: 12-30-24
I sit here having just finished this book with a tear rolling down my cheek. It was a pleasure to meet this family. I learned a great deal about the story of Linengrad.
The story reminds us that it is important to seek understanding for other people‘s actions by learning about the experiences, the losses, the loves that mold the whole person.
I learned about this book after reading The women. I believe I like this book better.

Historia
Four years before Nina Totenberg was hired at NPR, where she cemented her legacy as a prizewinning reporter, and nearly twenty-two years before Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court, Nina called Ruth. A reporter for The National Observer, Nina was curious about Ruth’s legal brief, asking the Supreme Court to do something revolutionary: declare a law that discriminated “on the basis of sex” to be unconstitutional. That call launched a remarkable, nearly fifty-year friendship.

I found myself captivated by the balanced accounting of RBG and her colleagues. RGB is a prominent role model for my generation. Tottenberg provides a warm inside look at her world. We need more RBGs.

WWII A father’s story
Revisado: 05-15-23
This book helped me connect with my father, a WWII vet. He too kept silent. I only began to feel his pain when watching “The Straight Story” with him and another vet. The tears streamed when the main character described a friendly fire episode.
The book gives insight into Walt’s character as well. He is an amazing physician and author who leads by example.

Classic Sparks
Revisado: 06-17-14
What did you like best about The Rescue? What did you like least?
The pace of the story is good for a commuting experience. I am from NC so the main reason I elected to listen was that the region is home to me. Characters are likable and you know the outcome will be happy. The book is predictable Nicholas Sparks formula. He has an uncanny love of fires and disasters.
If you’ve listened to books by Nicholas Sparks before, how does this one compare?
I have not. Only selected due to location.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He consistently and annoyingly mispronounce the name of the town. You would think he would have had the courtesy to ask.
Was The Rescue worth the listening time?
Yes, a feather weight diversion

Historia
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

Fannie is still funny
Revisado: 12-09-13
What made the experience of listening to The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion the most enjoyable?
The humor. Ms. Flagg brings the full Southern flavor the novel and her characters are lovable flaws and all. She does homage to a group of courageous women who made major contributions to the WWII effort and set the stage for women in service to the country. It will leave you laughing and crying.
What other book might you compare The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion to and why?
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe. Same humor. Same strong women. Same heart warming story.
What does Fannie Flagg bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Fannie Flagg's narration. Her accent is genuine, not the usual fake attempt to sound Southern. She loves her characters and that shines through
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Fun from Fannie as expected. I will give this as a gift to my favorite Alabamian for Christmas.

Pleasant distraction.
Missed opportunity to explore more social themes. Degenerates into a teenage romance novel.
Has On the Island turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Yes. Annoying voice. Sounded like a 78 rpm replay of a 45 rpm record.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
