Here is the timeless story of Mary Poppins, the world's favorite nanny, and her magical adventures with the Banks family. Mary Poppins is like no other nanny the Banks children have ever seen. It all starts when their new nanny is blown by the east wind onto the doorstep of the Banks house, carrying a parrot-headed umbrella and a magic carpetbag. She becomes a most unusual nanny to Jane, Michael, and the twins.

Amazing narration!

I always loved this book growing up. Very quirky and funny, and a bit of a different side of Mary Poppins than we saw in the cartoon. The narration was fantastic. Couldn’t have picked a better narrator!

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Terrible, whiny narration
Revisado: 10-29-24
I love this book so much that I read it almost every year at the end of October. I usually read a physical copy but this year I thought it would be fun to listen to it in audiobook form, something I’ve only done once before. I really appreciate Dan Stevens’ acting skills, but his narration skills need sharpening. His interpretation of the monster was so whiny that it made me cringe. It was one of the worst recitations of the story I’ve ever heard, with the exception of one of the other free versions on here that is performed by a guy with a monotone American accent. In the end, I absolutely could not finish this one and ended up finding a version that was much better on Spotify. Skip this one and get the version narrated by Peter Noble and Colin Salmon instead. That one was bone chilling and riveting!

Historia
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

Sentimental, somewhat surface presentation of war
Revisado: 08-11-24
2.5 stars rounded up. This book was just okay for me. The book focused on the three main characters’ romances more than I cared for. While the narrator read well, I found the weird Japanese accents off-putting. I’m a Japanese speaker and I don’t have any clue what accent the narrator was using when reading the kempeitai lines… I thought there would have been more details about the actual work the nurses did, which made that part of the story feel very surface-level. However, I appreciated that they didn’t shy away from the horrors of war without going into graphic detail. Overall, I thought this was okay, but I don’t think it presented any new material about the Indopacific theater to be of much value to a reader hoping to learn something.

Underwhelming (probably better reading the print version)
Revisado: 07-22-24
The female narrator was very annoying and blah, which distracted from the writing. The plot was completely predictable to the point of feeling trite, and I was tempted to stop reading with 5 pages to go. Joe’s character development felt real, though. Joe is why the story was at all compelling. Even the male narrator was better. I think if I had read it in print edition, it would have been better…

Narrator apparently couldn’t be bothered to learn how to pronounce place names (or for that matter, general vocabulary pronunciation). It was so off putting that I ended up finishing the book on kindle just to make it stop.

Simplistic writing but interesting plot and characters
Revisado: 06-02-24
Robert Jordan reminds me of Stephen King. The writing itself is actually quite bad, but the plot and characters are interesting enough to where you get carried along by the story. There are some devices he has used throughout the five books so far that I’m a little sick of, to be honest (e.g., overuse of similes). Also his writing of male-female dynamics is static and has a bit of a junior high school feel that makes the book feel more like a YA novel at times. I don’t know any woman that pulls their own hair when they get angry. That would be really uncomfortable and presents a childish and petulant image of Nynaeve that contradicts the confident and powerful character we know her to be. However, I feel invested at this point and it’s a good enough story to keep me going for the next 10 books.
I do wish they had all of the books with the Rosamund Pike narration. The male narrator for this production is atrocious. I cringe every time he creates a female voice and giggle whenever he blandly says, “burn me” or “Light!” The female narrator much better (I really liked her narration of some of the brother books). I found it very jarring that it switched back-and-forth between male and female narrators anytime the story switched between male and female character.

Rosamund Pike = hands down best narrator alive
Revisado: 04-13-24
I liked this book a lot better than the first one. The author seem to streamline his writing in a way I found more effective. While this series is not literature, he certainly creates engaging and fascinating worlds and characters. Rosamund Pike does so many unique voices, it’s astounding! However, even though I know this to be accurate from several threads I found online, I found it a bit offputting that the Seanchan lords had an almost Civil War era type southern accent. Don’t understand that personally, but it didn’t detract overall from the story or performance. .

Florence Pugh is fantastic. The rest is meh…
Revisado: 01-24-24
I thought this was a narration by Florence Pugh, and thus was very excited to listen. I was very disappointed to learn that this was a dramatization. Instead of hearing one good actor read the book, the bulk of the book is narrated by bad actors. There was barely enough of Florence. Ugh.
I do love the book, and it has long been one of my favorites. Would rather have read it than listened to the expanded cast.

Historia
Yoga is so prevalent in the modern world - practiced by pop stars, taught in schools, and offered in yoga centers, health clubs, and even shopping malls - that we take its presence, and its meaning, for granted. But how did the current yoga boom happen? And is it really rooted in ancient Indian practices, as many of its adherents claim? In this groundbreaking book, Mark Singleton calls into question many commonly held beliefs about the nature and origins of postural yoga (asana) and suggests a radically new way of understanding the meaning of yoga as it is practiced by millions today.

Infuriating narration
Revisado: 01-13-23
3.5 stars for the content which was interesting, there were just too many disparate topics linked together with little transition, and that made it hard to stay focused on the book, let alone actually recall the information.
The narration was very distracting, and made the already dry writing style even drier. It was bad enough to hear the narrator mispronounce names and yoga terminology, but the narrator also mispronounced English words. If I had to do it all over again, I’d pass.
