Part History, Part Mystery, Loved It
Revisado: 07-14-23
There are great mysteries yet to be solved in our ancient past, that much we can all agree on. Hancock has woven together a unified field theory of the thread connecting all those mysteries, and he has done so convincingly and backed by a great deal of evidence. This is Chariots of the Gods X 10.

Historia
Sartor Resartus is one of the most unusual, even quirky, British novels to emerge from the first half of the 19th century. Published in 1836, its varied heritage reflects the earlier eccentricities of Sterne and Swift, mixed with influences from Goethe. Its subject matter is strange: it concerns a book called Clothes: Their Origin and Influence by one Diogenes Teufelsdröckh, a German philosopher. Though Thomas Carlyle became a household name in his lifetime, his comic novel Sartor Resartus would prove to have a lasting effect on contemporary writers.

Just Couldn't Get Into It
Revisado: 07-14-23
Thomas Carlyle writes elegantly, and that's why I wanted to read this. I liked his other book, "On Heroes," and so thought I would take a chance on this one. But the story was a bit hard to follow.

Historia
Though uncompromising, polemical and argumentative, Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) made a lasting impact on 19th-century culture as a multi-talented man of letters. And though his lengthy history of the French Revolution proved his major scholarly legacy, On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History remains perhaps his most popular and accessible work. It presented his deep-seated belief that ‘Universal History, the history of what man has accomplished in this world, is at bottom the History of the Great Men who have worked here’.

Intelligent, Articulate, But a Bit Meandering
Revisado: 07-01-23
Carlyle makes the case for several figures of history as heroes. I enjoyed the book mostly for his use of language and for bits of wisdom typical of the author. The narrator is excellent and I will look for more by him.

Historia
In a sense, Cnut the Great was practically destined for greatness, if only because he came from a distinguished Danish royal family. Cnut's father was Sweyn Forkbeard, and his grandfather was Harald Bluetooth, both prominent and legendary kings of Denmark. Thanks to his background and his abilities, Cnut became the most prominent of the Danish kings of England, but he was also, at times, king of Denmark, Norway, and parts of Sweden.

Not Much About Cnut...and Just Mechanically Read
Revisado: 02-17-21
I'm not sure why this was recorded. It's a lot of detail tangential perhaps to King Cnut, but not exactly "the life and legacy" of the man, as the title describes. It's also narrated in a voice devoid of emotion that seems to emphasize precise pronunciation more than anything else. It felt dry and academic -- not at all appropriate for the telling of a life as full as that of the great king.

The Ash Tree is one of the best ghost stories written, and Jacobi delivers it with style. The other stories were fair by ghost story standards.

Historia
This collection of short stories contains several gothic tales of the macabre and chilling, by writers as diverse as Robert Louis Stevenson, Mary Shelley, H. P. Lovecraft and A. M. Burrage. These tales are designed to unsettle you, just a little, as you sit back and take in their words as they lead you on a walk to places you’d perhaps rather not visit on your own. Our stories are: "The Body Snatcher", by Robert Louis Stevenson; "The Mortal Immortal", by Mary Shelley; "The Thing on the Doorstep", by HP Lovecraft; and "Waxworks", by AM Burrage.

Cute But Not Terribly Original
Revisado: 06-20-20
I couldn't finish this. It just never grabbed my attention. It's a cozy mystery but a little too cozy, i.e., it feels like I've met these characters before and under more interesting circumstances. Nonetheless, the narrator is very good.

Good Story Telling
Revisado: 06-22-19
It's a series of tales of minor predicaments in which James Acaster suffers through awkward situations generally of his own making, all to good comic effect. I enjoyed his story-telling and he was actually quite a good narrator.
