Historia
Before Area X, there was Ambergris. Jeff VanderMeer conceived what would become his first cult classic series of speculative works: the Ambergris trilogy. Now, for the first time ever, the story of the sprawling metropolis of Ambergris is collected into a single volume, including City of Saints and Madmen, Shriek: An Afterword, and Finch.

Boring
Revisado: 04-20-25
I tried to get through this. But I would turn it on and after a while find myself thinking of something more interesting, like that I haven’t done my taxes yet or that I need to get toilet paper next time I’m at Sam’s. In what I did hear, there was virtually no story and no character to be interested in. Wish I had my credit back.

Historia
Steadfast in fighting crime, but operating outside the police force - and sometimes even the law - is the private detective. Driven by his own moral code, he is a shadowy figure in a trench coat standing on a street corner, his face most likely obscured by a tilted fedora, a lit cigarette dangling from his hand. The hard-boiled detective is known by his dark past, private pain, and powers of deduction. He only asks questions - never answers them. In his stories he is both the main character and the narrator.

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-24-23
It was mostly an attempt at a Statist political analysis of crime fiction generally. The further into it I got, the less it was about hard-boiled detective fiction.

Historia
The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems - and billions of people - are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction...and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.

A tribute?
Revisado: 05-09-20
I really enjoy John Scalzi's work. And I really enjoy Wil Wheaton's performances of John Scalzi's work. They are a recent find for me, and strictly through Audible. I started with Redshirts because it sounded funny, but it was more than funny.
Then I thought I'd give The Interdependency trilogy a shot, and I wasn't disappointed at all. Admittedly, I'm listening to a lot because I'm outside doing a lot of yard work because I can't go anywhere else, but that doesn't change my perception of the books.
So, I have one question for the author. I know that he has a background in Science Fiction because of his Red Shirt novel. I'm wondering if The Interdependency trilogy is, in some way, a tribute to Asimov. I can see parallels to the Foundation series--flow physics replacing psychohistory; The Interdependency replacing the Empire; AI replacing R. Daneel Olivaw. Obviously there are significant differences, but there seem enough similarities that I wonder if The Interdependency is connected to the Foundation series. And please don't think that this is a criticism. Shakespeare created very few plots, and he's the greatest story teller in the history of our language.
Whether it is or not, I highly recommend all three books in The Interdendency trilogy, and I recommend Wil Wheaton's performance.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

This was a well-performed and interesting story. I really liked it. The premise is wildly impossible, and no specific time period is mentioned, though it seems contemporary. But if you just accept the premise, you will really enjoy it.

Good story; great performance
Revisado: 09-25-19
I really liked this story. At first I thought it ended a bit abruptly, but then I realized that I felt that way only because I’m used to books that get dragged out. And I really liked the characters, especially the sisters.
I loved the performance. That might be partly because of the great accent, but more than that, the subtle differentiation between the two main characters. It was well done.

This story was like a fairy tale, with twists and turns, a heroine with a dark side and a heart of gold, villains, and literary allusions. I highly recommend it.
Well done, Julie Berry.

Fun
Revisado: 07-07-19
There’s a lot of silliness in Correia’s Tom Stranger, but it was great fun. I probably missed some of the topical allusions by listening instead of reading, but I got a lot. The ball pit was probably my favorite.
Baldwin brought the characters and story to life and sounded like he was having fun doing it.
This does not rank with War and Peace, What Happened, or other great works of fiction, but it was way more fun.

I liked the performance. The book itself was okay, though occasionally the cheerleading for scientists was a bit too much.
