Another Balogh Gem
Revisado: 10-07-20
Mary Balogh has a knack for creating interesting characters in interesting situations. This story is well crafted and the performance excellent. I feel I have probably gotten an accurate picture of what life was like in post Napoleonic war England with all the warts.

A great story that is well read.
Revisado: 08-02-20
The storyline, like all Nevil Shute’s stories, is interesting. I felt I understood each of the characters.... I enjoyed the interactions between characters, the sense that each behaved understandably. In short, I felt as though this story could have been real. The story is well read and now I will listen to some more Shute stories.

Who in the quiet village of Chipping would kill wealthy spinster Idris Campanula? Plenty of people—among them her fellow cast members from a troubled charity production. Miss Campanula was a spiteful gossip, gleefully destroying others’ lives merely for her own excitement. But once Inspector Roderick Alleyn arrives, he quickly realizes that the murderer might have killed the wrong woman—and may soon stage a repeat performance.

A Gem
Revisado: 03-29-20
Naio Marsh’s mysteries are always well thought out and presented. The storyline was clever and the clues appropriately spread out and later explained.
The narration was very well done. Each character’s voice was appropriate for that character.

Historia
The crime scene was the stage of the Unicorn Theatre, when a prop gun fired a very real bullet; the victim was an actor clawing his way to stardom using bribery instead of talent; and the suspects included two unwilling girlfriends and several relieved blackmail victims. The stage is set for one of Roderick Alleyn's most baffling cases.

An interesting and well performed treatment of what today's women face.
Revisado: 09-04-16
Jude Deveraux provides an interesting treatment of the obstacles women face and how they can be resolved. This story is well written and the narrator does a wonderful job . Each character is consistently depicted, their voices right on. The little bits of supernatural are believably blended into the whole.

Historia
Desperate to escape his mother's matchmaking, Vincent Hunt, Viscount Darleigh, flees to a remote country village. But even there, another marital trap is sprung. So when Miss Sophia Fry's intervention on his behalf finds her unceremoniously booted from her guardian's home, Vincent is compelled to act. He may have been blinded in battle, but he can see a solution to both their problems: marriage. At first, quiet, unassuming Sophia rejects Vincent's proposal. But when such a gloriously handsome man persuades her that he needs a wife of his own choosing as much as she needs protection from destitution, she agrees.

Another Survivors Club Gem from Mary Balogh
Revisado: 11-24-15
Mary Balogh is one of my favorite authors so this review is somewhat biased. I have almost every one of her books and don't think I have ever been disappointed by one of them. This story, like her other stories, is well grounded with character and relationship development minus unnecessary violence and overdrawn sex scenes. It is part of a series in which each of the main characters has suffered from war, each in a different way, and each is trying to recover with the help of the others. Every character and each story line is different.
I won't retell the plot here, just say I continue to look for each new part of the series with Rosalyn Landor's outstanding performances. I can and do listen to them more than once and each time I come away with new appreciation into both the characters and Balogh's approach to writing . Rosalyn Landor's performance, as always, enhances the story.

Historia
Resourceful, adventurous and utterly indefatigable, Sophy is hardly the mild-mannered girl that the Rivenhalls expect when they agree to take her in. Kind-hearted Aunt Lizzy is shocked; stern Cousin Charles and his humourless fiancée Eugenia are disapproving. With her inimitable mixture of exuberance and grace Sophy soon sets about endearing herself to her family, but finds herself increasingly drawn to her cousin. Can she really be falling in love with him, and he with her? And what of his betrothal to Eugenia?

A great disappointment
Revisado: 08-21-13
I am very very familiar with the original version of The Grand Sophy, having both read it and listened to an earlier recording. When I purchased this recording I thought I was getting an unabridged reading of the full Georgette Heyer book. Georgette Heyer has a delightful sense of humor and her stories should not be trifled with. This reading left out many key sections of the original storyline.
The reader has almost made a parody out of the main characters such that this is one of the few Audiobooks I will delete from my library. I listen to the stories in my library as a way to relax but I found this reading has left me annoyed and wishing I could give someone a piece of my mind for tampering with a good story.

Revisado: 02-19-12
Would you consider the audio edition of These Old Shades to be better than the print version?
I feel the book is better than this audio version. I did hear an early recording of this story with a different narrator and much preferred the earlier version. The voices were more believable (for the characters).
What other book might you compare These Old Shades to and why?
I'd compare them with any other Georgette Heyer tale. There's humor and there is some insight into earlier times and customs. I don't see them as completely accurate for the times but they do provide some sense of the upper class social scenes for the late 18th (this book) & early 19th centuries in England and France.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Cornelius Garrett?
I wouldn't go out of my way to find one - but given a different story he might be great.

A Great Story From a Dog's Perspective
Revisado: 02-19-12
Would you consider the audio edition of The Art of Racing in the Rain to be better than the print version?
Both the audio and the print version of this story are great. I had my doubts when I first started to read this account - how corny for a dog to be telling the tale. But Enzo is not just any dog and he is a great observer and a great narrator. The voice of the narrator perfectly reflects the characters and the narrative.
Which character ??? as performed by Christopher Evan Welch ??? was your favorite?
Enzo, of course. His philosophies on life are quite insightful.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I loved it when Enzo rode the track as a passenger - his joy and enthusiasm was contagious. Yessir, 2 barks all the way.
Any additional comments?
Everyone I've talked to who's read the book loved it. The audio version is as good - or better - and I will check out other books by Garth Stein.

A charming, thoughtful romance.
Revisado: 02-14-12
If you could sum up Completely Smitten in three words, what would they be?
The relationship between Kevin and Haley evolves without the artifice of gratuitous sex. The plot moves along and the characters are revealed gradually in a natural progression.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Haley is a joy. Her previously curbed warmth and ambitions are gradually revealed as the story progresses. She grows throughout the story. Kevin, our hero, also evolved and his heart warms up through the story. Still, Haley is my favorite.
Which scene was your favorite?
I loved the talent show ... atta girl, Haley.
Any additional comments?
A note on Allan, the ex-fiance, what an idiot! So nice to see him summarily dealt with.
