Historia
No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

Overwrought for a short story
Revisado: 06-12-23
Well narrated. Not a believable story. Very complex premise for something the length of an "episode."

Historia
At first, it looks like a disease. An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived. But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shock wave, unleashed by a stunning discovery - and what’s in jeopardy is not our minds but the very fabric of time itself. In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth - and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery...and the tools for fighting back.

Satisfying
Revisado: 05-15-23
Excellent story. Mild sci fi. Narrator for male character was excellent. Narrator for female character was not. I do not understand how production editors choose mediocre narrators when there are so many great narrators available. Baffling!

Loved the narrator. Story was Bond-esque and unbelievable. Characters were shallow. Surprise at the ending did not save the book.

Historia
In the best-selling tradition of Bill Bryson and Tony Horwitz, Rinker Buck's The Oregon Trail is a major work of participatory history: an epic account of traveling the entire 2,000-mile length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way, in a covered wagon with a team of mules - which hasn't been done in a century - that also tells the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country.

Not as good as first two
Revisado: 10-01-21
I liked the first two books in this series, neither was perfect but they were good enough. This one felt alternately rushed, forced, and artificially constrained. No good FBI agent would so thoroughly discard her safety and her team to chase down someone who has been after her. I just lost all respect for the character.

Historia
For all of neuroscience's advances, we've made little progress on its biggest question: How do simple cells in the brain create intelligence? Jeff Hawkins and his team discovered that the brain uses map-like structures to build a model of the world - not just one model, but hundreds of thousands of models of everything we know. This discovery allows Hawkins to answer important questions about how we perceive the world, why we have a sense of self, and the origin of high-level thought.

Too many suspects for audio book
Revisado: 05-15-20
This story might have worked fine in written form, but by audio, I would have had to take notes to keep track of the many characters. This author is fond of running two or more story lines at once, and that is about as much challenge for a listener as can be expected. Too bad, because I do like the team of police officers, and the narrator, Jan Cramer, is tops!

Preaching to the choir
Revisado: 06-11-19
If you don't already know this material, this book won't teach it to you, especially non-dual practices. If you already know about non-duality and the neuroscience of consciousness (or lack thereof), it's mildly entertaining to hear the author synthesize the two--to the degree that he does (not much).
I'm disappointed. I so wanted a book beyond and synthesizing topics from Buddha's Brain, The Accidental Mind, and Self Comes to Mind.
It's clear to me this author could have written more thoroughly from both his theoretical and his direct understanding. He's a good writer, I just wanted more.
