Historia
November 1866: The grisly murder site in London's East End is thronged with onlookers. None of them expect the calmly efficient young woman among them to be a medical doctor, arrived to examine the corpse. Inspector Richard Tennant, overseeing the investigation, at first makes no effort to disguise his skepticism. But Dr. Julia Lewis is accustomed to such condescension . . .

Didn’t see THAT coming
Revisado: 10-23-24
The story is old as time. Detective. Doctor. Male. Female. Grisly murders.
That’s wheee it ended for me in similarities. Dr. Julia Lewis faces off with A. Tennant, British detective attached to Scotland Yard. Bodies are turning up everywhere. The clues all add up—until they didn’t.
I admit to thinking myself an amateur detective. I mean…I watch all the police procedural shows. But I was so shocked by the killer’s reveal that I shouted at my car!
Nice, tight story. There is a romance…but it is slower than brewing a cup of tea with tepid water. Also, there are no repetitive jokes about tea. Thank you, author. Thank you.
Julia was a very believable character of her time as was Tennant. Neither tried to go against any new ideas. Julia was a typical woman of her time—frustrated at corsets and all the other constraints on women. Tennant was equally typical—convinced things were fine as they were. A firm believer in the place of women and of men.
I’m already looking for book two.

Creative world building
Revisado: 10-11-24
I enjoyed this book other than some cringe moments. The moment with Phillip and Dakota in the separate room was very off putting. I adored Cinnamon. I screamed about Wolf. I worried for Jinx. I will get the next book. There are trigger warnings that ought to be added. Violence. Assumed rape.

Such a good ending
Revisado: 06-22-24
As much as I want MORE from these characters, it was brought to a perfect conclusion.
For me, this is the kind of “end of a trilogy “ that is satisfying as well as heart wrenching. Lin takes some incredible risks for her empire. Much is revealed about Gio. And Jovis! He turned into one of my favorite characters.
The voice actors for this have been unfailingly good. I will listen to this again.

Rewind
Revisado: 05-15-24
Have you ever wanted to pause a book just to stretch out the pleasure of reading? This story was something that touched my soul.
Join Jenny Quinn on a journey to herself. From a life struck by tragedy at a very young age to a 77-year-old who decided to give it a go (applying for the British Bakes show, her life mesmerized me. I know it was fiction, but it felt so real.
Bernie is someone I know, I’m sure. As is Jenny. Olivia Ford created characters that could easily walk off the pages into your life like they did mine.
And I would really like to try Sticky Toffee Pudding now. And buy the book that doesn’t exist.

Historia
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

So funny
Revisado: 05-06-24
One bit stands out to me. When the heroine, Jacinta, is asked about marriage by the hero, Austin Steel. She responds, “Hell no! I’ve been to that circus. I know all the clowns. “
This is a fun read. The world building is tight. The red herrings swim quite well. A house that may or may not be inherently magical stands as a central character.
I’m off to get the next book.

The emotions
Revisado: 12-11-23
I enjoyed this more than book one. And I loved book one.
The growing up of Suneomi was well done. I did want to smack him silly about a certain flute-playing girl. Typical teen stupidity.

Historia
The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

Satisfying Ending
Revisado: 11-10-22
Really enjoyed this final book. I see where it could go on, but if it doesn’t, I’m very satisfied with the ending. El doesn’t grow so much as she is yanked and shoved forward. I like that she stayed true to herself. Her heartbreak felt real.
I will miss the Scholomance. Maybe Novik will journey there again. Heck, let’s cross worlds and set Temeraire free. :)
And yes, I will always beg for more Temeraire. :)

Unexpected
Revisado: 09-03-22
This was one of those books I picked up on a whim. I think it was for sale maybe.
Roz is a pistol. And like that item, she goes off with little warning. She and her partner, and best friend, Lysander take on magical crimes. They are a bit CSI in their technique.
I like the world Kelley built. There’s depth to it. It has a few things that felt too “our world,” but nonetheless this was a great story.
The narrator did a great job. I had no problem recognizing voices. I recommend this one if you like hard boiled, noir detective things.
