Historia
After meeting for the first time on the front lines of World War I, two aspiring writers forge an intense 20-year friendship and write some of America's greatest novels, giving voice to a "lost generation" shaken by war. Eager to find his way in life and words, John Dos Passos first witnessed the horror of trench warfare in France as a volunteer ambulance driver retrieving the dead and seriously wounded from the front line. Later in the war, he briefly met another young writer, Ernest Hemingway, who was just arriving for his service in the ambulance corps.

Rich stories of two important writers and their tangled friendship spanning two world wars and the Spanish Civil War. Their shifting and conflicting ideology, romances, adventures and writing assignments are set on a world stage.
Enjoyable.

Historia
In 1918, after four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia to take a job as the lighthouse keeper on remote Janus Rock. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes only four times a year and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Three years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel is tending the grave of her newly lost infant when she hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up on shore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Ethical dilemma
Revisado: 11-26-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I have recommended it many times. The story is riveting but at the end somewhat contrived. This is a great book club discussion book. The ethichal dilemma has many ramifications and twists and turns connecting past elements in a compelling way. It reminds me of a Jodi Picoult type story with choices where nobody can win.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the details of the setting, the strength of the characters and the forward movement of the story line. While it seemed a little slow at first, that introduction helped establish the characters for the later parts of the story.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator was poor. He was a mumbler. This has nothing to do wtih his Australian accent, he just did not open his mouth.
Any additional comments?
Good, fast read. Page turner.
