A Very Good One
Revisado: 07-08-25
A good Star Trek story, a classic/nostalgic ‘70s feeling production, and of course, the great James Doohan. What more need be said? I’d listen to him read the phone book.

Historia
Alden McCausland and his mother are what they call “accident rich”; thanks to an unexpected life-insurance policy payout and a winning Big Maine Millions scratcher, Alden and his Ma are able to spend their summers down by Lake Abenaki, idly drinking their days away in a three-room cabin with an old dock and a lick of a beach. Across the lake, they can see what “real rich” looks like: the Massimo family’s Twelve Pines Camp, the big white mansion with guest house and tennis court that Alden’s Ma says is paid for by “ill-gotten gains” courtesy of Massimo Construction.

Hilarious!
Revisado: 07-02-25
That was every bit as funny as Clemenses jumping frog! If we still exist, along with public education in a hundred years, high school English teachers will be assigning it.
Is that really what a Maine accent sounds like? Sometimes it seemed to slip into a nearly Aussie accent. I wish the author had read it to us.

Historia
Now middle-aged, Meadows seeks out his former captors in their civilian lives to help him bury his son, a Marine killed in Iraq, in Arlington National Cemetery. When he learns that the authorities have told him a lie about the circumstances of his son's death, he decides, with the help of the two others, to transport him home to Portsmouth. And so begins the journey, centered around a solemn mission, but, as in the first book, a protest against injustice and celebration of life, too, at once irreverent, funny, profane, and deeply moving.

Bronson Pinchot
Revisado: 05-28-25
I really liked the story and I had no idea what an exceptional actor is Bronson Pinchot! He was SO good reading this. Sometimes Billy Badass even sounded like Jack Nicholson. I wish they could have gotten him for the movie. The guy in the poster looks younger than the guy who plays Larry “the kid”. I expect the movie to be a real disappointment. I am once again glad of my policy to ALWAYS read the book first.

Historia
Unlike other branches of the armed services, the Navy draws its police force from the ranks as temporary duty - Shore Patrol. In this funny, bawdy, moving audiobook set during the height of the Vietnam War, two career sailors in transit in Norfolk, Virginia - Billy "Bad-Ass" Buddusky and Mule Mulhall - are assigned to escort 18-year-old Larry Meadows from Norfolk to the brig in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he is to serve an eight-year sentence for petty theft. It's good duty, until the two old salts realize the injustice of the sentence and are oddly affected by the naive innocence of their young prisoner.

Excellent Story
Revisado: 05-28-25
I liked the feel of it. It was clearly written by an old salt. No “Hollywood ending” there. And now we live in a world full of fools who think the Cold War is over and don’t even realize that nine of our eleven carriers are permanently in dry dock because we’ve got nobody to crew them and nobody to fix them, because we have eliminated American public education. Education IS national defense. Billy BadAss would just laugh.

Historia
Serenity is bound for the planet Kerry with a hold full of sealed unidentified cargo for the planet’s highest-ranking nobleman. The duke is a surprisingly genial man whose court brings all the fanciness and fun of Persephone’s high society but little of the pretension—and, most importantly, he’s got the promise of more work. Obliged to stick around while Inara is with a client—and hoping to score future employment—the crew settles in. The liquor flows freely at court, and there’s food, entertainment, and comfortable lodgings to enjoy.

Revisado: 04-12-25
Thank you m. England. I’ve been a brown boat since it was first on television and a new story is always appreciated. This one was nicely done. I’d sure like a story from after “the end” when poor Wash dies.

Historia
For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 04-04-25
This reminds me of the Martian Chronicles. Also, it helped me to frame (internally) an idea of which I have been trying to convince both my students and myself. The impending anthropogenic self-extinction is not reason to just give up and play with our phones. It is, rather, very good reason to DO SOMETHING meaningful with our lives! If we only have ten years left, then we should certainly not waste them doing the same pointless nothing as yesterday! Get out there and live every second of the life you have left. It was always all that you had left.

Historia
En route to far-off stars, Toby’s consciousness has a crucial mission: inhabit his clone long enough to repair a spaceship, then zip back to Earth. He’s done it a million times, more or less. OK, twelve times. It should only take a few hours. Until he wakes up in jail. And he’s not alone. His fellow prisoners: a cadre of alien soldiers. His prison: an ethereal boundary that will imprison their spirits until their bodies die. His jailers can’t even see him. But their pet cat (er, iguana cat?) can—and it’s got a serious case of the zoomies.

What an excellent idea and execution of science fiction. This is the kind of thing that made me fall in love with science fiction in the first place, over half a century ago. Thank you, Timothy Zahn! 🤓

YAY! I am so glad that this was so good. The First Lady Astronaut book was so good that it had me believing the author was a pilot and failed astronaut, like me. It was like she looked straight into my soul and described things that I have never been able to explain, despite my communications skills as a scientist and teacher. I was afraid that maybe this one would disappoint me, but it did not. I hope the next one can be this good. Thank you, Lady Astronaut.
