It Was OK

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-12-08

This book was reasonably entertaining. I found the background information about the political and legal status of gene therapy/slicing interesting, even though it did delay the action portion of the story. The story line came across as a bit farfetched, but did give me pause to think about.

Should Be Required Reading For All Americans

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-12-08

This book is a compilation of writings by service men and women who have fought the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and their family members. It does not take any particular political viewpoint, including authors who support the wars and those who do not. It does, however, provide a very thoughtful "insider's view" of what it means to be in the middle of the war. It gave me a much better understanding of the war than any newspaper article, or even from being deployed to Iraq myself.

Beautiful Story of a Geisha

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-11-08

This is a beautifully written novel about one girl's very difficult life as she grew up to be a famous Geisha immediately before WWII and after. The descriptions are so detailed and realistic that it is hard to remember that it is a novel and not a narrative about a real women. Since listening to this book I have read other books about Geisha, and it is very close to the first person accounts of real Geisha. I highly recommend it.

Engrossing Plot in Feudal Japan

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-11-08

This book has it all -- wonderful prose, suspense, beautiful descriptions, great pace, and to top it all off, a history lesson in feudal Japan (which before this book I knew almost nothing).

Totally Engaging

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-11-08

This story about growing up in war torn Afghanistan is absolutely beautiful and totally compelling. I found myself looking for excuses to be alone so I could continue to listen to the book. It gave me a much better understanding of the complexities and differences in culture of Afghanistan, while at the same time delivering a great story. I recommend it to everyone.

Irish History As Told By a Storyteller

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-11-08

This is a wonderful compilation of Irish stories, including ancient myths and legends, stories of gallantry during struggles with English domination, and most recent encounters in Northern Ireland. Before listening to this book, I had only a meager understanding of Irish history, but after finishing the book I have a much better appreciation of the rich history of Ireland. The stories are compelling in their own right, but are made more so by being woven into a larger story about the storyteller.

Heartwarming Story in the Midst of War

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-11-08

I listened to this book while stationed in Iraq with the Army Reserves. My role did not include operations outside the base, but this book increased my understanding of the soldiers' lives who did. The story is very heartwarming, but also very realistic, to include the boy's difficulties adjusting to his new life after rescue. I recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand better some of the complexities of the Iraq War, in the setting of a captivating story.

Makes the World Easier to Understand

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-11-08

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in a better understanding of the current scientific explanations for the origins of the universe, our earth, and life. He explains everything in easy to understand language, but does not "dumb down" anything. By the end, one has a much better appreciation for the immense size and complexity of our world and our place in it.
