A tale of when men were iron and ships were wood

A pretty good tale of old times when the church had so much power and was so evil. I am so glad we have freedom from religion in America. This is a sea tragedy, and tragic it is. Hurricanes, Typhoons, Gales, Storms and Gusts batter the Grand Spanish Galleon across the wide Pacific. All the while humans try to weather the weather and their prejudices. And their prejudices may be the worst part of the journey. There is disease, and accidents, and death comes in many ways. The worst way is human treachery, which is a constant even today. I did have trouble with some of the Spanish names and could not keep track of who was who because of the strangeness of them. And lastly the end could have been better, therefore a four star review instead of five.

This is a story of a young lad that has joined the Army in 1871. It is set in the west but no ordinary western. First Tom Stechschulte is doing the tell and he is magnificent. He will be best remembered for relating The Road, but he does just as well in this novel. I can tell which character he is doing without the he said or she said, and he does not over emote, just tiny inflections of difference. The story itself is no shoot em up page turner although there is action and death, and deceit. It is more like a saga, similar to Red Badge of Courage. You go through the pain this young lad does in his rough life in the army. Believe me, all does not go well, and I think I would have preferred it turn out better. The ending is abrupt and does leave something to the imagination, but you can figure it out and I think mostly I just did not want it to end at all. Bravo to the author for he has penned a tale.

The world through a childs eyes is a much more interesting place. The narrator Kathrine Kellgren, is perfect for this book, and reminds me of the girl that did the tell, in Thunderdome. I enjoyed the accent both displayed. The book is written for young people, maybe teens or tweens, but I am seventy one and I enjoyed it. It is a fiction that only a young imagination could dream up. But just suspend your disbelief and enjoy it. I have already downloaded the second in the series, Curse of the Blue Tattoo.

This book is a combination Days of our Lives, and Family Feud. I don't know how I got it as I was looking in Mysteries and Thrillers. This is no page turner, and is very touchy feely. The ending is very hokey and I knew the ending long before it came. That said it is not a bad book, and is easy listening for an unrequited love story. There is some action, the family feud part, and a hint of ghosts, but not scary ones. Not my type of book, but if you like soaps, go for it.

What did you love best about Feast Day of Fools?

I just love listening to James Lee Burke's prose. It is poetry to me.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I can't decide which I like better, Hackberry Holland or Robicheaux although I can't help but think Huckleberry every time I hear Hackberrys first name. I think it is Burke's characters that keep you on the edge of your seat. There are always some nut jobs in his books along with some purely evil people. I can't wait to hear what they will do next.

What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?

Will Patton always teams with James Lee Burke to give steller performances. Patten is a good actor and unlike some other popular readers, he does not chew the scenery or over emote. He could recite McGuffey's reader and I would listen until he finished.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

In a word YES. But I did not just want to, I listened all night long without sleep.

Any additional comments?

I you like film noir books, then get this one. If you like Mysteries and Thrillers, then get this one. If you like Adventure stories, then get this one. If you liked Psycho, the movie, then get this book.

A saga you should not miss

George R. R. Martin is a wordsmith and storyteller that has few equals now or in history. His Iron throne kingdom is an empire full of unusual, deceitful, traitorous, hateful, cruel, loving, kind, intelligent, stupid people. By now you get the idea, it is kind of like today, but a long time ago. I had really hoped that book five would wrap up so many stories like Aria Stark, the kingslayer, the dwarf, Circe and finally John Snow the bastard, and while some met there end most are waiting on another book, so I will too. Regretfully another couple of years methinks.

This is a good mystery about a very brave 13 year old boy and his missing sister. He continues to look for her throughout the book but you know there is little chance she is not dead already. This book takes more twists and turns than that funny street in San Francisco, and that is the difference. It is well written and why anyone would complain about the narrator, I will never know. Worth a credit if you like mysteries. I sure wish all my downloads were this good.

I like a good western novel and I like a lifetime saga. While this book only spans 20 years or so, it is still a saga of a five year old boy going west, and trying to remain alive. He has an evil grandfather that wants him dead and leaves him to die in the Mojave desert. There are interesting characters and L'Amour knows how to write a book. This is the western genre though so if you do not like stories like Lonesome Dove, then this is not for you.

Books like this are why I am an audible customer. It took a little time to get into the book because it does jump around a bit. I even had to rewind a bit and go back to reconnect to the story, but it was late and I was drowsy too. Unexpected twists and turns kept my attention from then on. Well written book by a wordsmith that knows how to turn a phrase. Well narrated too. Five stars for mystery lovers.

I thought the book was just ok. Things could have happened the way the book tells it, but Pantoliano kind of messed it up for me with his whispering garbled style. Some I couldn't understand at all and I am not sure what effect he was going for. Maybe Don Corleone with a mouthful of cotton but it ruined the book for me. He is a good actor and should stick to that.
