I only wanted to add that Roosevelt's voice should be at the table when we are finally forced to confront our true founding. I truly hope this work becomes our Northstar to a finally realize who we are as a Nation...a beacon of hope in written word.

Really left wanting...

Frankly, I had so much enthusiasm when I saw Dr. Sharone preview his book on YT, but, alas I am left wanting after finishing it this morning. The tip-off to my coming disappointment should have been the HR consultant/counselor vibe of the narrator (speaking as a long-term unemployed, college-educated white-collar technical professional), which makes perfect sense now, in retrospect. The exchange here is heavily-focused on moderating the effects of the system via better policies and expanded support to help the long-term unemployed, There is a brief mention regarding the impact of the Puritans on U.S. work culture, a brief mention of the "C-word" and UBI in Ch. 7, but what I was looking for a different conversation. A deeper conversation. BTW, that dirty "C-word" that's so hard for us to talk about...the thing that actually causes all of this...the thing that folks like me were hoping to unpack in this book...yea, I guess I'll have to wait for Pt. 2.

The fact that the author is also the voice talent makes for an authentic listening experience that is more cathartic testimony and heartfelt plea than simple narration - particularly in the way she describes and indicts the ideas and institutions of violence that are both promoted and commodified in America.

I believe what Oluo puts forth is bitter medicine - not only for white men to hear (particularly when their spirit is seized in the clutches of such despair and self-loathing)...but also in regard to the role that patriarchy plays in the perpetuation of violence and domination among all men (speaking as one) - in relation to ourselves, each other and everybody else.

Kudos Ijeoma...I salute your willingness to be so courageous, thoughtful and vulnerable in writing such an important book.

I hope Roland is sitting at the table when we finally all come together as citizens to ensure that everyone has a voice when our process of truth and reconciliation begins again.

If there is a chance for reinvigorating the "American Dream" for all members of the working class, I would hope that Ms. Williams is given a voice at the table.

Fukuyama articulates and correlates each of the big, over-arching intersections where political conflicts are occuring in the U.S. He does so by revisiting the founding tenets of liberalism while staying dispassionate and clearly apart from any theory, in particular dialogues around critical theories, that in his estimation are too conditional, group-focused, and exacting in their causal analyses to have any import what-so-ever to adequately address the broader global effects of neo-liberal philosophy. This, in my humble assessment, ultimately is Fukuyama's myopia as he dismisses these out-group proposals as little more than "critical stories" better suited for the individual to seek repair through litigation than serious socio-economic group/class critique. With such considerations dismissed, he is freed to offer a set of ideas for how these conflicts could be addressed or at the least attenuated if our increasingly polarized and self-centered aspirations are not moored to some common cultural and political anchor. This is a necessary and important analysis, that over time, would ultimately be required to acknowledge its own patriarchal underpinning and not ignore the perspectives provided by the same passionate proponents of critical theory who have been traditionally marginalized and excluded from this discussion of a shared "commons,".

There is something here for everyone - as tedious as a 5,000 year reflection on debt can be (at times), it's all relevant to understanding how Graeber's conclusions are derived. Among this analytical maelstrom of economics and history is his use of one word that I found most compelling and profound - love.

Deeply factual and sourced chronologically, it is more of an "intelligence report" than a sweeping story of political policy values. It's a recounting of "us" against the backdrop of 45 years of Neo-liberal geo-politics...almost to the point of tedium. It is so sober, that you might be left more to despair than be assured a solution to our persistent racial-caste economy is even possible, especially given the degree to which our national politics has become infiltrated with cynical and insincere partisans.

Overall, an excellent and insightful audible book. Narration was superb, minus a couple of excerpts where the voiceover was a bit too "performative", it was a thorough pleasure. The information is easy to understand, but nuanced enough for listeners to (hopefully) hold an empathetic ear to the fears and anxieties held by an aging slice of a waning cultural group that has never extended much of the same to others, as well as the possible ways by which we might all find a new social grace and tolerance for each citizen's notion of "freedom."
