Historia
After much searching, Amber and Stevie find the perfect house - a bit shabby but with potential - in Grimaldi Square. Just the two of them; a place where they can start their lives together. Recently married, they want to begin a family (with the help of their gay best friend, Jack). Despite the rundown pub across the way, the overgrown garden and a decidedly nosy neighbour, it's the house of their dreams. But they are not alone in this dream.

Simply simple
Revisado: 03-28-25
I laughed, cried, sighed and gasped in equal measure.
One of the gentlest books I’ve listened to in a long time.
I think by having Sandy narrate her own story, the characters come out the way she wrote them and not as interpreted by someone else. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

Historia
An anonymous letter arrives at the offices of the Clarendon English Dictionary containing a challenge for the team of lexicographers working there. It's clear that's it's not the usual run-of-the-mill, eccentric enquiry. The letter hints at secrets, lies and a year. 2010. For Martha Thornhill, the new senior editor, that year can mean only one thing: the summer her brilliant, beautiful older sister Charlie went missing.

Words matter, but old words are to die for.
Revisado: 10-18-24
There were times where I felt that I was inhabiting one of Susie’s diaries.
Recognising favourite words such as aprisity and respair and now, having used them here, I am complicit to an uptick in some dictionary database.
If the reader is looking for an insight, a behind the curtain peek, of the goings on of the OED (CED in the book) they will not be disappointed.
Susie brilliantly congers up an Oxford that is all smoke and mirrors. On the surface all calm polite mon ami, whilst just below a seething cauldron of resentment and long held animosity. In short, the characters are as real as the pesky neighbour next door.
The plot leads the reader into the inner sanctum of scholarly endeavours with losing them to mind numbing minutia.
The labyrinthian and linguistic hurdles presented to the reader are eased by the gentle narrative of the writer.
All that to say, a good read (listen) and one I would throughly recommend.

I’ve played this book approximately 500 times…
Revisado: 03-12-22
That doesn’t mean I’ve heard it all… let me explain.
I put on Susie Dent as I turn out the light and snuggle in to sleep. 10 min later, I am.
This is not to say I’m being ‘bored’ to sleep, far from it.
Susie’s narration in like the tinkle of water in a babbling stream. It lulls me off into the arms of Morpheus. And I love it.
No matter where I start the book, I am still hearing derivations and anecdotes for the first time.
And yes, I do use some of my boarding vocabulary on my unsuspecting friends.
In short, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
N.B. To hear Susie explain the ancestry of the F word had me in stitches! This is a great listen, thank you Susie, for letting me sleep with you.

When the world’s going mad, you need the right kind of policeman.
Revisado: 03-12-22
Wow. No wonder Lee Child is peeved with you.
The similarities between Jack Reacher and Joe Puller is…. astounding.
Both men where cleaved from the same piece of granite. But enough chit chat, on with the revue.
I thought the twin narration worked well but there were a few instances where the wrong character voice was used. Sort of trips up the tempo of the piece but overall worked well.
The inclusion of incidental mood music irked me personally but I can see where others might enjoy the enhanced atmosphere.
The story line rolled along well, with enough twists, turns and red herrings to engage the listener. A good listen for long distance drivers but not a literary classic. In short. Chewing gum for the ears.
The violence was graphic but well metered and not overly gratuitous.
The sex was excellent in its tension and in being unrequited.
All in all I enjoyed the book except for my constant ‘Reacher’ flashbacks.
Having said that, those who don’t like Jack, you may like John.

Finished more due to loyalty than enjoyment.
Revisado: 11-01-21
Nothing gelled in this story.
The characters were thin, the situations implausible and the story line moronic. Even Jeff Harding seemed less than enthusiastic.
Ether Lee is tiring of Reacher as a character, or the co-writing hampered his normal style, but page turner this wasn’t.
Well less than satisfied, well left alone.

A reasonable ramble.
Revisado: 04-22-21
Initially I was drawn to this book by the narrator, Jeff Harding, who voices the Jack Reacher series among others. I see someone else didn’t like his style but I found him to be his usual laconic self.
The story itself is a fair enough yarn. Not good enough to be unable to be put down, but engaging enough for me to want to see the outcome.

Historia
Jack Reacher gets off the bus in a sleepy no-name town outside Nashville, Tennessee. He plans to grab a cup of coffee and move right along. Not going to happen. The town has been shut down by a cyber attack. At the centre of it all, whether he likes it or not, is Rusty Rutherford. He's an average IT guy, but he knows more than he thinks.

Same old, same old.
Revisado: 10-29-20
Reacher does what Reacher does. Stumbles into a simple problem that ends up being the tip of a convoluted iceberg.
Once again Reacher ends up being a cross between McGivver and Edge (A man alone). Able to distill the meaning of life from the bend in a blade of grass to indulging his psychopathic need to kill without pause or regret.
With Reachers ‘wandering’ years now well established, I would like to see another book set in his formative years. West Point being top of my list.
In short a good, if not formulaic, yarn. Not Lee’s best work, not his worst.
