I liked this book, however it took some time to get into it. Slow and somewhat tedious with much detail, that I am not sure was necessary, but the pace picked up about a third of the way into the book. I would still recommend it; once it got going it was very interesting.

A very good story depicting the real possibilities re the relationship of man with the horse. Proven from earlier times in history, the horse once again, like the dog and the dolphin, shows its capability for loyalty, trust, and care with mankind. In addition, the story is set during World War I and offers a horrifying view of modern fighting methods meeting outdated methods.

A most unusual, enlightening, and riveting story about culture differences and religion. It may cause you to think and feel differently. It did me.

Better read than listened to. I'm know there is greatness here, BUT be ready to listen attentively... to discern who the speaker is, as well as who is who among characters. Plus, following the story line is rough-going as it seems to jump along. However, a thread appears at the conclusion which pulls together all that had gone before...so be patient. My fault--I listened in snatches of free time; an approach I would not recommend. Light in August would be best heard when interruptions were minimized, as when one is driving a long distance. Despite this review, the characterizations, descriptions and careful detailing prove it a true "classic."

Excellent book! Great reader! ... but 3rd download ended abruptly...4th download was missing to end the book. Rechecked audible for it, but with no luck. A mistake? Very disappointing to miss out on the end of a book.

Fascinating book; it was hard to put down. Written from a viewpoint not often heard, from that of black maids working in white homes. The book helps the reader gain increased understanding of black American life in the deep South during the early '60's. Extremely enlightening.

An eye-opener

This is an honest and courageous book. The author shares the details of her life from childhood to adulthood living as a female Muslim. By her birth alone, she is automatically trapped in the shocking reality of growing up female in a religious culture calling for unreasonable, unconscionable suffering for half its population. As the author grows from childhood to adulthood, her intellect, insights and ability to reason bring clarity to her circumstances and those of her Muslim sisters. With courage, conviction and action she alters her own life to escape despair, and inspire other women--and men--to eradicate needless suffering. This memoir is a huge eye-opener for a non-Muslim person. It has erased my ignorance about the beliefs and practices of Muslim culture. It is a "must read" to understand from where Muslim beliefs originate which call for inhumanity to its women, glorifies suicide of its men for the gain of paradise, and keeps its "peace-loving" leaders from decrying atrocious acts against non-believers.

I enjoyed listening to this very much. The title itself is a clue to the unique and mysterious relationship between men and animals. I learned a great deal from the author's explanations, experiences and descriptions about autism. He offers a greater understanding of the condition through recounting his family's adventure into finding help for his autistic son. He leads the listener to fascinating far-away parts of the world and to a race of people unknown to most. It is an uplifting and hope-filled work. I highly recommend it.
