A Deep Dive into Sci-fi with a Progressive lens
Revisado: 03-16-25
How Great Science Fiction Works by Gary K. Wolfe is an engaging lecture series that explores the evolution of the genre, its major themes, and the impact of key authors and works. Wolfe's deep knowledge and passion for science fiction shine through.
However, it's important to note that the course leans heavily into progressive political interpretations of the genre. Listeners with left-leaning views will likely resonate with the lecturer's perspective, while right-leaning sci-fi fans may find themselves frequently disagreeing with his analysis, as the lecture assumes the necessity of feminism, the pervasiveness of racism, and the threat of climate change. That said, even those who take issue with the political slant can still gain a great deal from the historical and literary insights presented—especially regarding the pulp era and the golden age of sci-fi magazines.
Regardless of political background, this course offers a well-researched overview of science fiction's development. Right-leaning listeners may need to take some points with a grain of salt, but they’ll still come away with a list of works and authors that they'll want to read.

Unexpected ending
Revisado: 01-13-23
I didn’t see it coming; I was prepared to be disappointed with this 4th entry in the Demon Princes series when Vance cleverly ties all of his loose ends up in the last few minutes of the work. In the end I was wholly satisfied and can’t wait to start the final book in the series.

Great Vance Sci Fi Detective story
Revisado: 01-08-23
Vance is one of my favorite authors but I’d previously only read his Fantasy works. He’s as masterful at world building in the Sci Fi genre as he is with the Fantasy series of the Dying Earth and Lyonesse.
I like the reader a lot. He offers a good neutral baseline while also providing some subtle vocal accents to secondary characters; it’s subtle enough so that it’s easy to identify which character is talking while not making a mockery of them (eg, assigning a ridiculous Scottish accent to a character).
