The horse Susan Richards chose for rescue wouldn't be corralled into her waiting trailer. Instead, Lay Me Down, a former racehorse with a foal close on her heels, walked right up that ramp and into Susan's life. This gentle creature, malnourished, plagued by pneumonia and an eye infection, had endured a rough road, but somehow her heart was still open and generous.

What can I say that can reach you who reads this review? It reached into my heart and stole me away? It did. It was engrossing... I lost myself to its grasp. We all want to belong and love and be loved kindly and honestly by that special someone who’ll never leave. We don’t want loss, it grinds us down but it somehow strengthens us be it painfully within or without our will submitting. Unconditional love is what we seek and we may only find it standing on four legs. Either way we need it and it’s beyond price. This beautiful story torn me down and built me up ... transcendently.

The artwork survives, but when controversial mask maker Jaeger Merrill is found drowned in the co-op basement, Kathleen questions whether the death was accidental. After she discovers the artist was using an assumed name, she realizes she can't actually assume anything about him.
