Disappointing ending to a series
Revisado: 09-24-19
I don't typically listen to dramatized books but since I enjoyed the Expeditionary Force series I decided to give it a try. The narrators alone should be worth the investment. This installment was pretty much a disappointment. The book was short and didn't really flesh out the scenes very well. This audio version had too much time filled with music and sound effects. The last 15 minutes or so felt like someone was fulfilling a contract for a 6 hour audio book. I've been an audible listener for over 15 years and have only returned a book once. This came close to being the second.

Historia
In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, set in 12th-century England. Readers and listeners ever since have hoped for a sequel. At last, here it is. Although the two novels may be listened to in any order, World Without End also takes place in Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building their exquisite Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge.

Only 2 stars due to the prolific detailed sex
Revisado: 10-16-18
Ken Follett is a good storyteller and the reader is excellent. I quit the book about 1/3 of the way in because detailed accounts of the sex between characters were becoming a major part of the story. This may appeal to some, but not me.

This is the end of the Academy Series for me
Revisado: 04-22-18
What would have made Cauldron better?
There was little in the book to keep my attention. I kept waiting for it to get better and in the end, it was disappointing. It's like he had to write another in the series but really wasn't into it. I have enjoyed the series up to this point but I won't be looking for any more books in this series.

Historia
Rosemary Harper doesn't expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and, most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman, she's never met anyone remotely like the ship's diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot; chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks, who keep the ship running; and Ashby, their noble captain.

A Long Slow Way To A Mediocre Finish
Revisado: 09-26-17
Would you try another book from Becky Chambers and/or Rachel Dulude?
No. I found it difficult to get through this book. I kept waiting for something to happen and the pace to pick up but it never really happened. The plot is summarized in the title of the book. It is all about the characters and their personal interactions during the journey.
Was The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet worth the listening time?
No, not for me.

Only book I could not finish in 5 years
Revisado: 12-22-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I am constantly listening to Audible books and reading one or more print books. This is the only book I have given up on in five years. I am going against the tide here but I felt this book was too long and some of the rabbit holes the author explored really didn't add to the story. I got 3/5 of the way through before giving up. I kept waiting for something to happen in the story but it didn't in the hours I spent listening.
What was most disappointing about Neal Stephenson’s story?
Some of the sections he included didn't add anything to the book. I really didn't care to get pages of description of his breakfast cereal.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Yes, because 50% of it would be removed to make a movie

This book kept me interested for the entire 41 hrs
Revisado: 09-21-16
What did you love best about The Pillars of the Earth?
The characters were well developed. I felt like I knew them by the end of the book. I sometimes get tired of the good vs. evil stories, but not this time. One of my favorite books.
What did you like best about this story?
If I had to pick one thing I liked least, it is that 41 hours is a bit long to listen to. The is an abridged version, but I wouldn't want to miss anything.
What about John Lee’s performance did you like?
Great story teller/reader. I'm going to look for more books read by John Lee.

Stretching
Revisado: 02-09-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This was not the best book in the series. I think she is stretching these book out too much. Not enough content here.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending was a little disappointing. I thought I had more time in the audiobook, then all at once it was done. It felt like part one of a two part book.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

One of the best books in 10 years
Revisado: 02-24-15
I've been an audible listener for about 10 years now and think book is one of the best, if not the best, book I've listened to. I knew nothing about crew rowing when I started this book. By the end I had learned a great deal about the sport, the history, and most of all the 9 men in the boat. When I finished it this evening and came in to tell my wife about it I became emotional. That was a first for me. When I reached the end of the book it was like I had lost 9 close personal friends. The book was excellent and the narrator was one of my favorites. For the first time, I am tempted to start the book over and listen again. It was that good.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Great story painted by words
Revisado: 01-08-15
I've been an audible listener for many years listening to a book a month. This is one of the most enjoyable books I've listened to in a long time. The author can paint mental pictures with careful selection of words and phrases. The story comes alive and is a joy to listen to.
The only thing I didn't like is the way the story jumps back and forth in time. This is not a book you can casually listen to. If you zone out for a little while you won't know what year it is.
I look forward to more books by Doerr
