Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

A mediocre story about an interesting time.
Revisado: 10-23-19
my feeling are almost entirely encompassed by the title of the review. the time period is fascinating, the pack horse library is neat, the coalmine strikes are extremely important... and inspite of all that, the author told a largely forgettable tale of rural Kentucky in the 30's, in which the heroine is a bit of flotsim being propelled along the story by external forces either, what's more For someone who loves books, she certainly has a almost non existent internal life. to add insult to injury on all this writing, the author handles the racism as largely "aww shucks, isn't it aweful that folks could be so racist to a pretty white girl." and the ending brings that thought with a particular clarity. It is clear the author has never experienced prejudice in any meaningful way in her life.
the reader is the bright spot of the performance and does the best she can given the material.

great narration ruined by not having anything interesting enough to read. I got this book for free and if still doesn't seem worth it, especially with how it just drifts along.

Historia
Sarah Beauhall has more on her plate than most 20-somethings: day job as a blacksmith, night job as a props manager for low-budget movies, and her free time is spent fighting in a medieval re-enactment group. The lead actor breaks Sarah's favorite one-of-a-kind sword, and to avoid reshooting scenes, Sarah agrees to repair the blade. One of the extras, who claims to be a dwarf, offers to help. And that's when things start to get weird.

Almost exactly what I wanted. Almost.
Revisado: 05-10-17
This is a prime example of something being so terrible because it is only almost what you wanted. A wlw story with dragons and blacksmiths, all ruined by being written by a person with no intimate knowledge of queer culture. it is that last bit that really brought it down. there are dragons and magic swords and the dude that wrote this book thought that somehow relationship issues he knows nothing about would be more interesting.
i also highly suspect that he was under some contract to make the book so long, because damn, there is a whole hell of a lot of useless filler and a heavy reliance on telling instead of showing, or showing, then telling because the author really thinks we are all stupid.

Overall Excellent, not as explicit as expected.
Revisado: 04-03-17
Given the other reviews, I was expecting something far different than what I got, and I loved it anyway. It is far more horror than romance, but the gay relationship is important and nessisary. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for something different and interesting, as I don't know of any other gay magic gunslinger books.
I am docking a star for the slighlty less interesting bit in the middle, and the authors occasional slippage into telling not showing. The interactions between folks, and the world built up around it all, more than makes up for it, the need to know what happens next.

good but at least half a book.
Revisado: 03-17-17
I really enjoyed the psychological bent and the thrill of this book, and can easily recommend it, but I do deduct points for having no resolution and ending right at the high point in the story. i have yet to listen to the second book and thus can not say if this series is worth thd split or not.

A hero without peer or scruples, Sam Gunn has a nose for trouble, money, and women, though not necessarily in that order. A man with the ego (and stature) of a Napoleon, the business acumen of a P. T. Barnum, and the raging hormones of a teenage boy, Sam is the finest astronaut NASA ever trained and dumped. But more than money, more than women, Sam Gunn loves justice—and he really does love money and women.

SAM GUNN LIFE STORY

almost great.
Revisado: 11-18-16
I would say that this book is 1/3 great, 1/3rd mearly good, and 1/3 actually rather bad. If it were not for Ben Bova's past and current wife, I would argue that he had not known women, or had even known love, because those are the two bits that really drag down this story. He can not write women, and he seems to not be able to write love convincingly.
If this had been written in the 70's some of it's ideas would be forgivable, but by 2007, Mr. Bova should have learnt something. This book is a loose collection of short stories with a frame work around them, similar to Hyperion, but it lacks variety of story. I would say a couple of them are interesting and I truely enjoy the idea of the in system space exploration and expansion, after a while, everything seems all samey samey, and by the last 10 hours, I had to jack up the speed to get through the book.
I did find the performance spot on, and all the voice actors did a great job. no complaints there.
long story short, this book should only be checked out if you grab it on sale.

Starting to get stale
Revisado: 09-30-16
I get the distinct feeling that the author is starting to hate hank. The poor character can't seem to go 5 minutes without whining, or without making a stupid comment. The book seems bloated with many dropped plot hooks, that didn't need to be added, and only seem to get resolved as the author remembers to deal with them, including the main plot which is only infrequently dealt with.
I also feel bad for Liam Owen, there is only so much that could have been done with what is written, and unfortunately that was not enough. I hope the author takes some time off, to regain his passion for the story, and maybe to take a writing refresher.

Contrived, Childish, Deprivative, and Simple.
Revisado: 09-22-16
Everything about this book is interesting and unique, apart from the romance, which itself seems to be coppied from a hundrend other YA novels. For some reason, the author has this idea that the hackneyed emotional tripe that is inserted would be far more interesting than exploring the rich and new world created with a pair of properly loving and cute lovers. I can not recommend this book as the unique bits are far too far and inbetween everything that we have seen before and done better.

the story itself is above average cyberpunk/noir detective story, but the reader just sounds so darned bored. If you feel the craving for the genre, listen to the story at 1.5 times speed to get any decent pacing at all.
