Historia
There are shelves of memoirs about overcoming the death of a parent, childhood abuse, rape, drug addiction, miscarriage, alcoholism, hustling, gangbanging, near-death injuries, drug dealing, prostitution, or homelessness. Cupcake Brown survived all these things before she'd even turned 20.

No matter what comes your way, don’t give up
Revisado: 03-23-24
I don’t think I have ever read a book that has evoked so many emotions. Without being long winded I’m simply going to say that this is a true story of triumph in the face of lifelong adversity.

Historia
This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

Simply amazing
Revisado: 05-23-13
Where does Shantaram rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have listened to so many audiobooks that I have lost count. Among those that I have listened to there are a few that stand out and Shantaram is definitely one of the stand out books. While listening to the book I had to keep reminding myself that it was a work of fiction. Often times I felt like I was sitting around with a friend who was telling me of his life's adventures. I have recommended this book to quite a few of my friends. I would absolutely rate this book in my top ten all time reads (listens).
What about Humphrey Bower’s performance did you like?
The narrator was fabulous. His performance was natural and true. There was never a time while listening to the book that I felt like I was listening to a book. It truly felt like he was talking to me. I will certainly seek out other books that he has narrated.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This story was so vivid that I ran the gamut of emotions from anger to joy. There were times when I would laugh out loud and awaken my husband from his sleep. The characters were genuine and believable. They seemed like real people that you'd come across in your own life.

Historia
Sophie Kinsella's debut is a romp through the perils of shopping and spending, spending, spending! Becky can't resist a sale, and she's only a little overdrawn on her VISA. Readers will laugh aloud at Becky's retail adventures as she finds new and creative ways to relieve her increasingly credit card debt. Emily Gray's narration bounces along with Becky and her buying whims, while delivering a humorous account of what happens when credit goes bad.

Confessions that should have been kept
Revisado: 08-21-12
What disappointed you about Confessions of a Shopaholic?
As a self-proclaimed shopaholic, I really expected to hear the secrets I wish I could admit to. Unfortunately, I found neither interest nor connection with this character.
I really tried several times to listen to this book, but it never captured my attention.
What could Sophie Kinsella have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I was expecting a more mature character, but instead it felt like I was overhearing a phone conversation between my teenage daughter and her friends. I'm not sure this book was written for a mature listener. It reminds me of a made for t.v. Disney movie.

Historia
We medicate, discipline, suspend, and expel our boys from school at quadruple the rate of girls. We let double the number of boys drop out of high school than girls, and of those boys who do graduate, they are far more likely than their sisters to be illiterate, to fail to go to college, or to drop out of college if they do go. Swagger is a wakeup call for parents about the real world our boys inhabit right now, but it offers solutions as well. This audiobook is packed with research-proven, parent-tested, practical solutions.

Bringing manhood back to America
Revisado: 08-21-12
What did you love best about Swagger?
Straight to the point and easy to understand, Swagger was really eye opening because while many of us know the hopelessness that our boys face, no one has really broken it down in such a basic way as this.
What did you like best about this story?
The story was honest and actually made me evaluate what my teenage son is exposed to and how much control I have over what influences him. It made for easy dialogue with my son.
Which scene was your favorite?
The part of this book that got my attention and made me pause (and rewind) was the section on hip hop and rap music and its lyrics. Wow! I've heard these songs, but have not really paid attention to the lyrics and the meaning behind the songs. From now on, I will definitely seek out the lyrics to songs I hear my kids and their friends singing.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I found myself shaking my head in agreement, disgust, frustration, and finally hope. This book has prompted me to have new conversations with my teenage son. And interestingly enough, he opened up about his opinions on these topics more than I thought he would.
Any additional comments?
While listening to this book in our family room, I caught my son tuning in. His interest was peaked and we had great conversations about what the book was saying. While we have always talk about "stuff" this book opened up meaningful dialogue. It is a good tool to use to get insight into the mind of a young man so that action can be taken before he falls victim to the hopelessness awaiting our boys. It gives him a chance at survival.

Here is the Whitney only family would know.... Somewhere outside the glare of the concert spotlights...behind the tawdry entertainment news headlines...beyond the crush of the scandal-seeking paparazzi...lies the truth about Whitney Houston. And few individuals are better qualified to show us that complicated, funny, generous, troubled, extremely loyal Whitney than the friend she called "brother", Bebe Winans.

The real person behind the chaos
Revisado: 08-21-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
While I can understand that BeBe Winans really wanted the listeners to hear his story in his words, I found his story to sound less convincing because it sounded like he was just reading the book out loud. Since this is his experience and his observations I expected to hear more emotion.
What aspect of BeBe Winans’s performance would you have changed?
I think another narrator may have made the book easier to listen to.
Do you think The Whitney I Knew needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I do not think this book needs a follow up because the author accomplished his goal. He allowed the listener to share in his personal relationship with Whitney Houston, which demolished negative perceptions of who she was and made her a loving, caring, giving human being with struggles just like the rest of us only on a grander scale.

America’s high divorce rate is well known, but little attention has been paid to the flip side: couples who creatively (sometimes clandestinely) manage to build marriages that last longer than we ever thought possible. What’s the secret? To find out, best-selling journalist Iris Krasnow interviewed more than 200 wives whose marriages have survived for 15-70 years.

The Secret Lives of Wives is eye opening
Revisado: 01-27-12
What made the experience of listening to The Secret Lives of Wives the most enjoyable?
While reading this book I felt like I was in a room of my married girlfriends and everyone was being open and honest about their marriages. There was something to learn from each story. I am proud to confess that my husband and I have been married for 17 years and there were good times and there were bad times, but this book let know me know that I/we are not alone. Marriage is an adventure to be shared.By the way my husband overheard me listening and enjoyed the book too.
What about Bernadette Dunne’s performance did you like?
She was personable. I felt like she was right in the room talking to me.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Throw away the cookie cutter and find what works for you.
Any additional comments?
I'd like to see Iris's other books available on audible soon.
