sweet but slow
Revisado: 02-08-20
Sweet and kind, but struggled to finish. Very slow burning romance. Lots of childbirths! Lots of soul searching. Needed more action.

Historia
Verna Lind expects Christmas of 1952 to be the best holiday she’s had since the war ended. But as she’s leaving the bank, a frigid wind off Lake Erie catches her hard-earned Christmas club savings, whisking the bills into the busy streets of downtown Cleveland and devastating her plans. Strangers come to her aid, though no one anticipates the power of their chance encounter or the seeds of happiness Verna’s lost money will sow.

struggled to finish
Revisado: 11-24-19
Historisch interessant, weil ganz neu für mich, aber sooo lang! Zu viele Leute, zu viele politische Einflüsse - für ein Audio-Buch zu kompliziert (und zu lange). So was muss man lesen. Ich könnte nicht alles zusammen halten.

Historia
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.

What I never learned at school
Revisado: 11-09-19
incredible insights into features of WW2 at home, things I for sure never learned in school. Of course there are books to read, but here you hear recordings of people who lived through it and talk about it. An amazing project.

Dark villain
Revisado: 02-25-19
I like historical romance and this Georgian story might do it - except for the villain. A fiendish insane woman who expertly manipulates others and thinks nothing of killing infants - no thanks. It's different! But I could not get over the cold-bloodedness. I finished the first book but skipped the second with the same returned villain. All the other reviewers are gushing over this book, but you may have to be in the mood for it. I am not a fan of Salt either - he is too cold for me for most of the time.
Alex Wyndham's narration is wonderful, even female voices. I bought the series because of him.

Historia
In this highly anticipated new novel, Diana Gabaldon brings back one of her most compelling characters: the unforgettable Lord John Grey - soldier, gentleman, and no mean hand with a blade. Set in the heart of the 18th century, Lord John's world is one of mystery and menace. Diana Gabaldon brilliantly weaves together the strands of Lord John's secret and public lives.

Jamie and Lord John on a mission
Revisado: 08-07-18
This story takes place during Jamie's time in Helwater. Lord John's brother Hal sends them on a mission to Ireland. I like the interaction of the two brothers, with shadows of things to come in the main series. But I really liked the probing of the mystical and faith. On one hand Jamie is a really smart man who can puzzle out the motivations and the real story, on the other hand he is deeply rooted in faith and nature, open to the supernatural. The story is sad in parts, but it is good to see more of the developing relationship between Jamie and LJG.

Historia
A 39-year-old with Asperger’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder, Edward Stanton lives alone on a rigid schedule in the Montana town where he grew up. His carefully constructed routine includes tracking his most common waking time (7:38 a.m.), refusing to start his therapy sessions even a minute before the appointed hour (10:00 a.m.), and watching one episode of the 1960s cop show Dragnet each night (10:00 p.m.). But when a single mother and her nine-year-old son move in across the street, Edward’s timetable comes undone....

I switched to reading
Revisado: 01-22-18
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I switched from listening to reading. Edward is extremely OCD. The way you find out about it is that every morning and every evening he goes through the same ritual which is described in detail. I had to switch to reading to skip those parts! Not for the narrator, who is excellent, but for the story. I really did not need to know the parallels of a Dragnet episode on Edward's life. Sorry.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Edward's character is portrayed well - he has a problem but he is also a person with feelings. He just cannot express them or understand them in others.
