A lively combination of natural history and travel writing. The author poetically tells his story without much preaching, a rare feat in current nature writing. Beautifully written, informative, and adventurous. A refreshingly good listen!

Worth a listen

The author walks readers through the human history of the moon. She shares plenty of interesting ancient mythology and stories as well as more modern human history. It gave some mention to biological and evolutionary influences of the moon, though I wished these had been a bigger focus of the narrative. Overall worth a listen.

Humorous and intriguing

This is my first book by this author. I will certainly be seeking more! Her writing style is humorous and curious. She asks the most engaging and unlikely questions, and describes her findings and experiences with irony and slightly self-deprecating humor. I would love to be her travel companion :p

Sheldrake weaves a wonderful, engaging, and surprising web of information about a subject that surrounds us every day, yet we hardly notice. Thanks to his book, now the world of fungi is brought into better focus.

I have to admit I downloaded this book simply because it was free, and I was out of credits. I was pleasantly surprised how much I loved it! The author’s writing style is humorous and informative, breathing colorful life into potentially tedious scientific information. I found myself captivated by his research and paths of discovery. His interwoven personal story was fun, well-connected, and unpretentious. Bravo!

This is the first Quamann I’ve listened to. I will likely listen to more! His writing style is sardonic, spunky, and informative, and his subjects are intriguing. A fun listen.

The potential is there….

The book has good potential in tying science with the author’s personal history, but falls short of doing so in an engaging or cohesive way. On a lesser note, the performance is awkward. Audible recommended this to me, probably because I loved Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life. Granted, Sheldrake set the bar high, but I just couldn’t bring myself to finish this one.

You are bound to learn something fascinating from this book.

Well written with lots of fascinating information based on recent and cited research. I listen to a lot of ecology based books and this was one of the best / most interesting I’ve heard in a long time. The intricacies of our backyard ecosystems are happening right before our eyes, yet almost completely unseen. But now that I know a bit more about them, I’ll be tuned in. And I’ll be planning to plant another oak! You are bound to learn from and be amazed by oaks if you listen to this book!

We are lucky to live in such relative peace today in America

Incredibly well researched and smoothly written. I gave four stars instead of five simply because the length and brutal violence make it hard to get through at times, in the same way it’s hard to get through Shirer’s Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Yet, when the book ended, I wanted it to continue through history, following the times of Tecumseh. This part of American history is not often discussed, least of all with a goal of objectiveness or accuracy. Eckert’s research goes far and wide to get as close as we can to both. The book is very long, and dark and bloody indeed. But it is absolutely worth the listen.

Yikes! Take what you read with a grain of salt. Difficult to persevere through this book…. Was hoping to learn more about science and research, but the book is 99% journalistic rhetoric, largely ignoring the fascinating science around this amazing animal - except for a few mentions in the epilogue (which is just an hour long summary of the previous ten hours). Might have been enjoyable at half the length….
