This one's worth the 17+ hours!

I'm definitely not an expert on these authors, Cynthia Dane, Hildred Billings, as others seem to be. I've only listened to a couple other books by them. I would have to say this is by far the best one I've heard of their work. Let me say right up front I am not Chinese in anyway shape or form, I do not have any ability to speak to those aspects of this book. Having said that, I did find that this book captured me and held my interest for the full 17 hours. The characters came across as being real characters with true human problems and not caricatures as sometimes happens. I found myself being truly interested and in Rose's journey and not sure what the outcome might be.

The power dynamics both between Rose and Cindy as the main couple is interesting in itself. But the book takes us deeper and we get to see the dynamics within the businesses and the families behind both women I definitely found the book interesting and worth a listen.

I would like to spend a moment talking about the narrator, as I understand it this was her first book. I think she did an and admirable job on it. It would've been amazing job just been a 17 hour book about an American subject, but the fact that she also had to deal with the Chinese terms and names would make it a formidable job for anyone. I think it's worth a listen just for her outstanding performance.

This is one of those books that you don't expect much from and it's pretty good. The ending needs to be a little better, I'm not exactly sure how, but it doesn't feel thought through. There are some fun throw away lines, the premise seems to be generally circulating at the moment, but still it's fun to think about. It's a fun 3/4 of an hour.

I thought the narrator did a good job with it and made the story come alive. I'm sure we will hear a lot more from her in the future!

Obviously, this is a short little piece. I'm not sure it should be under erotica. It does deal with lesbian romance, shock of shocks. (LOL) But other than that it's a rather nice character piece it has little going for it. It is short, so it doesn't develop a whole lot, but in the small time that it does have it tells a pleasant enough story. The characters are human and believable and I would recommend it for killing a half an hour.

The narrator does a good job with it. The characters are distinct and I found it easy to follow. I would definitely recommend her for other projects.

To be honest, this review is based upon only a small amount of this book, which was the amount that I could force myself to actually listen too. I am sharing only my experience so please take it with a grain of salt, I found this book to be so poorly researched as to be totally unbelievable. In my mind, it spreads disinformation about a sensitive subject to a point of almost being dangerous and it didn’t need to be. The characters have no depth or reason to do what they do, other than as a contrivance to get to the end of the book. I truly believe there are better ways of spending your money and your time.

The narrator seems to have done a fine job. Again I have to admit I didn’t listen to enough of it to adequately rate it so I can’t give it a stellar rating. I would suggest in the future the narrator might choose better material but that’s definitely not in my area of expertise.

It's a good listen, if only it was a better book

I really wish I could write a better review of this book. I liked listening to this book, I just wish there was more substance to it. It is so cliché ridden. I wish the authors could have tried to do something new but alas they didn't. The dialogue was one cliché after another. The whole premise of the book was just a clichéd premise with a slight twist of gray hair. I don't care what sex you put it in, it still felt like rehashed Saturday morning soap opera drivel. I do think that the performance by the voice actor was above average. There were things that I would call out as being problematic, but they tended to be bound to the quality of the writing. On the whole this is one of those books that is not a waste of time, but it won't add to the quality of your library either.

This is one of those books that delivers exactly what you expect, no more no less. It’s exactly what the title says, there are no more frills added to the plot only a bit of of explanation. But one doesn’t read a book like this for in-depth character development and interesting plot twists. There are some inconsistencies and holes in the plot but what do you expect from a book like this? I found the book fun. Definitely worth the money and time spent on it.

The narration and performance of the audiobook were sparkling. The narrator sounds like she is a season professional, but in a quick search nothing else turns up. I would definitely want to keep her on your radar because she sounds like she’s going places!
