Historia
It was medieval England’s immortal marriage - Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II, bound by passion and ambition, certain to leave a legacy of greatness. But while lust would divide them, it was friendship - and ultimately faith - that brought bloodshed into their midst. It began with Thomas Becket, Henry’s closest confidant, and his elevation to be archbishop of Canterbury. It ended with a perceived betrayal that made a royal murder seem inevitable. Along the way were enough scheming, seductions, and scandals to topple any kingdom but their own....

Historia
In When Christ and His Saints Slept, the first of a trilogy that will tell the story of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, master storyteller and historian Sharon Kay Penman illuminates one of the less known but fascinating periods of English history. It begins with the death of King Henry I, son of William the Conqueror and father of Maude, his only living legitimate offspring.

Historia
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world. But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

Addie is truly a forgettable person!
Revisado: 11-24-24
We never got to learn what it means to sell one’s soul… in all of 300 years, Addie didn’t bother to get to know Luc and who or what he was. She whined and complained and we never saw tangible growth. No wisdom. She remained a selfish person throughout the novel. She wasn’t even capable of love. And Henry? So now we are supposed to swoon over weak men? How would any intelligent woman even fall for a do-nothing who just ambles through life with no purpose or passion. The novel could have had so much potential and it all fell flat.

Historia
First appearing in 1782, Dangerous Liaisons is one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European literature. The plot unfolds through a series of letters as the two main protagonists, the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, attempt to bring about the seduction of a young woman. The epistolary nature of the novel gives a multi-faceted perspective of the action, which places the book firmly in the tradition of libertine literature.

Historia
The orphaned Jane Eyre has emerged a fiercely independent young woman. As governess at Thornfield Hall, she's found her first real home - though it stands in the shadow of the estate's master, Mr. Rochester, and its haunted halls ring with maniacal laughter. For even the grandest houses have secrets. As much a story about defying convention as it is about coming-of-age, Jane Eyre remains one of the most beloved novels in the English language.

Revisado: 11-06-24
I read Jane Eyre at least once every couple of years. It is full of pain, love, joy, personal growth, and God’s redemption.
It is a work of magnitude that no other book comes close to for me. And this narration was superb!

Historia
Leila Beaumont is a gorgeous and talented portrait painter trapped in a loveless marriage with her profligate husband, Francis. Though long ago, Francis very much played the hero, rescuing and wedding the orphaned 17-year-old Leila - Francis' more recent hedonistic lifestyle of drinking, drugging and womanizing has not only earned him quite a few enemies in London, but lost him the love of his wife.

I disliked the heroine. Such an underdeveloped character.
Revisado: 10-12-24
I’m amazed this book has so many 5 star reviews. We are supposed to somehow admire and like Leila, I guess. Why would man like Ismal fall for her? Someone who has traveled the world and been through so much in life, he falls in love with this reclusive woman. She’s not even an interesting conversationalist. Throws temper tantrums all the time. One moment we are supposed to believe she’s all naive and sheltered (has no idea of her husband’s debaucheries), another moment she’s solving a crime with Sherlock’s precision and deep knowledge of human character. I wanted to return the book after 4 hours of laboring with it but I couldn’t so I had to finish it to save the rest of you from this poorly written novel. :-)

Forced into a marriage of convenience, Elissande and Vere are each about to discover that they're not the only ones with a hidden agenda.

Meh…
Revisado: 09-16-24
It started out well and had so much potential. But then, like most contemporary writers do, it became a cheesy story with a heroine whose character never really developed, while the hero fell in love with this unlikeable heroine. We were constantly told about her generous bosom, as if generous bosoms can inspire lasting love. How could a man of Vere’s intellect fall in love with an almost uneducated woman who, on top of being super naive, was also cunning and manipulative.

Meh
Revisado: 08-16-24
It didn’t have the fluidity and heart of the first 2 books. It almost sounded like the author wasn’t sure how to keep it going naturally so she threw in supernatural events. And I was never convinced that Artretes really loved Jesus or that Ritzpah could ever fall in love with a brute like him…

I normally don’t give 5 stars to any book unless it changes something inside me profoundly. This book did it. My other favorite book that has made a huge imprint on my heart has been Jane Eyre.
Please read this book (or better yet, listen to the amazing narration!). I felt like God was speaking to my soul through the talented hands and mind of Mrs. Rivers.

Uninspiring book
Revisado: 05-31-24
I sincerely disliked the main character and how lazy and irresponsible he was. I don’t even understand what Camus was trying to prove with his theory that all life is meaningless. Some of these philosophers are either extremely bright or very stupid the way they view life.
