Probably a fantastic read but deplorable performance
Revisado: 04-28-25
It was virtually impossible to get through the performance of this probably fantastic book. The performer's cadence and seemingly random intonation were wholly distracting from the book's delivery. I am headed to Greece on holiday soon and had hoped to pick up insights on its history, but I am left no further along this path than before I picked up this reading.

Historia
At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

We whites would do well to gain this black perspective. Baldwin exposes the cracks in the white power structure but also in movements of black response

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Another rich storytelling by Dr. Verghese
Revisado: 02-20-25
As a physician, avid reader, and traveler, I was recommended Cutting for Stone by a patient's husband and just read the Covenant of Water. Both are poignant fictions woven with real history from real places and full of the ups and downs of real life. Bravo!

Historia
One of William Faulkner’s finest novels, As I Lay Dying, originally published in 1930, remains a captivating and stylistically innovative work. The story revolves around a grim yet darkly humorous pilgrimage, as Addie Bundren’s family sets out to fulfill her last wish: to be buried in her native Jefferson, Mississippi, far from the miserable backwater surroundings of her married life.

Faulkner in authentic voices
Revisado: 11-17-24
As disjointed as Faulkner's writing can be, the spot-on authentic voicing of this performance helps make it better comprehensible to the listener. Great performance of a great story

Historia
When Barbara Kingsolver and her family move from suburban Arizona to rural Appalachia, they take on a new challenge: to spend a year on a locally-produced diet, paying close attention to the provenance of all they consume. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle follows the family through the first year of their experiment.

The educational journal I couldn’t put down!
Revisado: 02-14-24
Kingsolver is so earnest, clearly expressed, and maternal, and yet also funny and sometimes irreverent. I am now armed with so many reasons to change my lifestyle, and need only to muster the energy and figure out how to implement her lessons. Now, when I go to the grocery store, I am eager at first and frustrated by the end. it is clear that she has touched on the absolute fabric of our lives’ needing fundamental change. It’s hard to start, but probably equally important to do so! Great read

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Amazing story
Revisado: 04-05-22
While I have long been a fan of Trevor Noah, this crazy memoir makes me fonder still. Furthermore, hearing stories told in his many languages and accents makes the recording even more impactful than the written version must be. My hardy recommendation for a great, short read with insights into life during the apartheid from the inside.

Hoping to move on to better things, he decides to escape his new, equally dreary surroundings and head to London. It is there that the novel unravels as Oliver meets a host of larger-than-life characters, including The Artful Dodger, a high-ranking member of a juvenile pickpocketing gang, and their elderly leader, Fagin.

A brilliant story told by what would seem an entire cast
Revisado: 03-21-22
I have wanted to read this book for decades and finally got around to it through listening on audible. Though I picked the narration randomly, his narration through different voices is spectacular. No complaints and only praise although I must say I listened at 1.7x and this seemed a reasonable pace.

Historia
For many parents of troubled teenagers, a therapeutic program that takes the child from the home for a period of time offers some respite from the daily tumult of acting out, lies, and tension that has left the family under siege. However, just as the teenager is embarking on a journey of self-discovery, skill-development, and emotional maturation, so parents too need to use this time to recognize that their own patterns may have contributed to their family's downward spiral. This is The Parallel Process.

Father going through the wilderness process
Revisado: 01-23-22
My 15-year-old son is currently in Utah, enrolled in a wilderness program. We have known that he was slowly slipping away from the path we wanted for him and were not sure how to get him… and perhaps us… back on track. Although still unsure, the examples, scenarios, and possible resolutions elucidated in this book were certainly spot on with his particulars. I look forward to trying on some new skills when he returns to us.

Anna Karenina: a lovely performance
Revisado: 04-01-21
I love Tolstoy and very much enjoyed Magie’s reading of his masterpiece. She has such a lovely, gentle voice as an actor and performed her reading beautifully. It is clear she does not speak French and could have improved those parts, had a French speaker coached her through them. Even so, I recommend both book and performance.
