Fun for the Anglophile
Revisado: 03-17-24
This was my first Trollope novel, and what fun it was. Surprising relevant to today's concerns over social media and disinformation. If you like Dickens, you'll like Trollope.

In the 1880's, an American senator observes, with some perplexity, English country life and all of its social echelons. To add some spice along the way, we follow the romances and intrigues of the flirtatious Arabella Trefoil.

Not my favorite Trollope
Revisado: 03-14-24
The story isn't terribly compelling, though I've wonders if Trollope was expressing his ideas about British politics through the mouth of the senator. The narrator also didn't do too much for me. Timothy West's narrations of Trollope are far superior.

A masterwork by a master
Revisado: 02-20-24
This is one of Trollope's best known novels, and for good reason (even though he supposedly considered it a failure). A powerful and tragic story of a marriage gone off the rails. My only complaint is of the narrator's dreadful attempt at an American accent for the American characters.

Compelling plot
Revisado: 12-04-23
A compelling story but it dragged a bit, and I'm a little tired a women falling into bed with men after one deep conversation and then in the morning, promising to take things slow. Exasperating. But otherwise an interesting story with a satisfying ending.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

We in the 21st century can hardly imagine an ordeal such as this. Thankfully Lansing's immaculate research and storytelling make it possible for us to come close to understanding such endurance and perseverance through such impossible conditions. Riveting.

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Loved it
Revisado: 09-28-23
This book relies on mystery novel cliches while at the same time turning them on their heads. The mystery within (or without) a mystery is a delightful and compelling twist. The literary milieu, references, and allusions added to the pleasure of this book. Narrators were great. Now I really wish there were eight more Atticus Pünd novels.

Historia
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues - a bee, a key, and a sword.

Doors, keys, hallways, bees, repeat
Revisado: 09-11-23
At one point in the novel, the author writes (paraphrasing) "Zachary Ezra Rollins was sick of doors." By that point of the story, so was I, along with every other bit of imagery that was beaten to death. I really liked the characters and was invested in how things would turn out for them, but getting there was like, oh, I don't know, drowning in honey?

Historia
Anthony Trollope's classic novel centers on Mr. Harding, a clergyman of great personal integrity whose charitable income far exceeds the purpose for which it was intended. On discovering this, young John Bold turns his reforming zeal toward exposing what he regards as an abuse of privilege, despite the fact that he is in love with Mr. Harding's daughter, Eleanor.

Trollope never fails to weave together characters that generate the strongest feelings in his readers. Mr. Harding (the warden) is a truly good man who is a model of kindness and magnanimity who must see his way through a most difficult set of circumstances. It would be an honor to have such a friend as he.

I loved everything about this production. The narrator has a riveting voice and emoted beautifully, and the story is riveting. Of course, as it's Dostoevsky, it warrants a second listening, which I gave it immediately following my first time through.

Historia
A remarkable resemblance of two boys born on the same day in the 16th century became the basis of Mark Twain’s first try at historical fiction. This resulted in a fable that was almost a fairy tale, one that became a fine story for young people of all ages. There were many unjust laws in the 1500s, and Twain delved into them with his usual remarkable insight.

Awful production
Revisado: 10-02-22
Look, it's a classic story by one of the great writers of all time. That's not the issue. The problem is, this is THE WORST produced audio book I've ever heard. The narrator, a legendary newscaster, sounds like he marbles in his mouth. He frequently stumbles over words. And, worst of all, the splicing between the sections is just terrible. The volume changes, things send to cut off but then jump right back in, etc. If it hadn't been free, I would be really annoyed.
