But how much do we know about the world Hannibal was born into and came of age in? In Hannibal: The Military Genius Who Almost Conquered Rome, get to know one of history’s most impressive generals from the political and military conflicts that defined his adolescence to the battles that made him famous. These 15 lectures will paint a portrait of not only Hannibal, but also his enemies and allies.

Great Listen. Now I want to learn more.
Revisado: 04-15-23
The lecturer presents a comprehensive overview of the Second Punic War and the world of the Mediterranean at that time. After a brief overview of the First Punic War and the status of Carthage and Rome, she provides a detailed account of the war and Hannibal's genius. The war is described primarily from the viewpoint of Hannibal and the Carthaginians and allies that fought alongside him. This is impressive considering all of the sources were written by the winner of this war (spoiler alert: it was Rome).
A secondary, but important quality for an audio presentation like this is that Dr. MacDonald has a nice voice to listen to, which makes the course more enjoyable.
The information conveyed in this course, pacing of the material, and the presentation are all 5 star.

By understanding the dramatic story of the Ottoman Empire - from its early years as a collection of raiders and conquerors to its undeniable power in the 15th and 16th centuries to its catastrophic collapse in the wreckage of the First World War - one can better grasp the current complexities of the Middle East. Befitting a story of such epic scope and grandeur, every lecture is a treasure trove of historical insights into the people, events, themes, and locales responsible for shaping the story of this often-overlooked empire.

Informative and Great New Perspective
Revisado: 09-30-17
I've gained a better perspective on the Ottoman Empire after completing this course. The author / narrator concentrates a considerable amount of attention on the political and military history of the O.E. I tend to enjoy this aspect of the course, but for those interested in cultural history this course has much to offer in this respect too.
Probably the best insight that I took away is a new view of Ottoman history from their perspective and not from the Euro-centric perspective that I was taught in most of my high school and college courses. Highly recommend this course and the professor!

Worst Audible Decision
Revisado: 09-25-17
Any additional comments?
I've downloaded over 100 titles from Audible and this was one of the few I've regretted opening. I was hoping to learn more about nutrition and the interaction of the food we consume with our bodies. I was looking to use the information to make more informed choices related to my diet and to live a healthier lifestyle. The first couple lectures are anthropology related. While interesting, this is not what I hoped to hear about. However, the lectures soon take a bizarre turn. I stopped listening after Professor Crittenden advocated eating bugs, so I can't say if the course continues to decline from that point. However, this wasn't out of the box advice offered after presenting more mainstream information on the western diet. Bug eating is what Professor Crittenden decided to open with. There are many other offerings that are informative and don't open with encouraging you to go into your backyard and eat bugs. I'm going to try one of those instead with my next Audible credit.

A 360 degree view of Ancient Persia
Revisado: 08-28-15
This is a great course for people new to studying ancient history or people that have studied it for years.
For periods I was familiar with, like Alexander's invasion of Persia, Prof. Lee does a great job of presenting the Persian viewpoint which is very thought provoking.
Topics like the role of women in Persia, the economy of the period, and the daily lives of everyday people were covered in penetrating detail with reference to the ancient sources.
The downside of the overall excellent presentation is that Professor Lee is too in love with the topic and appears to sometimes dismiss Greek sources completely while presenting Persian sources with little criticism.
