Solid Story, Brutally Painful Narration
Revisado: 07-12-24
Incredibly compelling and gripping plot, it was all too easy to see these story lines potentially playing out in real life.
That being said, this was probably the most painful Audible narration I've ever inflicted upon myself. The narrator's droning cadence and over-enunciated pronunciation style often came across as a tenured, burned-out kindergarten teacher reading a Dick and Jane book to their class just prior to nap time. Even listening at 1.25 speed, it was a slog to continue listening at many points.
To finish critiquing the narration, I cannot emphasize enough the need to consult with a military veteran or three to ensure proper pronunciation of military jargon and acronyms.
Apologies for spending most of this review ripping on the narration but that's my biggest take away from this book. This narrative performance was a terrible disservice to the author and what was otherwise a great story.

Historia
The Legion is the most elite direct-action force in the galaxy, hammering the enemies of the Republic...but some missions require a scalpel. Historia
For years, the ancient alien AI known as Skippy (the Magnificent, don’t forget that part) has been able to do one impossible thing after another. What is his secret? It’s simple: 100 percent Grade-A extreme awesomeness. And also because he had never been faced with an opponent of equal power. Until now. This time, he might need a little help from a band of filthy monkeys.

Incredibly predictable and lazy story telling. Milking this worn out and tired series for the last few pennies. The Oceans 11 ending was such a cop-out, a short-cut for a writer who needs to find new ideas and energy. I hope the series recovers but this is 2 stinkers in a row now. No more pre-orders from me.

What an incredibly anticlimactic and disappointing ending for what was, up until this book, one of the best sci-fi serials I'd ever listened to.

Decent story
Revisado: 12-29-21
Was going along really great until towards the end when 'evil' Western capitalism was slammed in favor of the ebullient and virtuous socialist democracy, whatever that means. Author just had to throw in with the globalist narrative. Won't be patronizing this author ever again. Have fun with your build back better.

The Merry Band of Pirates offered the bad guys a ceasefire. We won’t mess with them, if they don’t mess with us. Easy, right? No. The aliens chose to do things the hard way. So, the Pirates are racing around the galaxy to clean up the threat to Earth. The infant UN Navy has their own mission with the Alien Legion: Get humanity some allies in the fight. And the Ethics & Compliance Office might have to do something...ethical. Unless they can find a way around it.

Super-duper disappointed by the prevalent sprinkling of F-bombs throughout. Why? That adds nothing to the telling of the story. Please remove that in future stories.

Historia
The Iron Wolves are a company of legionnaires whose legendary exploits date back to the Savage Wars. When they are invited to be guests of honor at a ceremony on a small, backwater planet, they look forward to some precious time away from the constant conflicts of galaxy's edge. But when a neighboring country invades, disrupting the ceremony and killing innocents, the Wolves are forced to make an impossible decision. Aid a people pleading for their protection...or obey the cynical orders of their senate to stand down and see how the dust settles.

losing steam
Revisado: 04-05-21
By far and hands-down the weakest and most flimsy of the Galaxy's Edge series. Seems like the authors may be running out of ideas. It was an effort to even bother finishing this one.

Historia
The daughter of a Legion war hero, fighting was in Andien Broxin's blood. But the battles Republic marines face on strange and alien worlds are a far cry from the vaunted, brutal, no-holds-barred conflicts fought at the edge of the galaxy by the elite legionnaires. Until a devastating war erupts right in the Republic’s stellar backyard. Newly stationed on a mid-core planet being harassed by terrorist revolutionaries, Andien and her fellow “hullbusters” find themselves right in the middle of a desperate fight for survival.

Awful Narration
Revisado: 03-21-21
What the narrator tried to pass off for as Irish brogue made most of lieutenant Owen's dialogue completely unintelligible. Just stop. That just about ruined the whole book for me. I finally just stopped rewinding, trying to understand, and just gave up. Might have been a better book if I could have actually understood a significant portion of the dialogue.

Story was solid. Narration was very, very meh. Don't change horses in midstream - and if you do change narrators make sure they pronounce character names consistent with the previous versions! Audio mixing engineer for this one should be fired. inconsistent gain settings, cut-ins and edits etc were very obvious and super distracting. Seems like this narrator has/had frequent sinus issues - gross.

Neat concept but...
Revisado: 12-16-20
The ultimate idea and ending of this book are pretty intriguing. However, the execution of the story was terrible. The story bogged down again and again (I almost quit the book during the ridiculous Prince battle scene.)
If you loved Ready Player One and hold Ernest Cline in high regard, do yourself a favor and skip this book, lest all that come undone as you slog and trudge your way through this one.
